How a California Mountain Town Improved Connectivity for Its Community

Until their partnership with Helium, Pine Mountain Club residents struggled with spotty cell coverage.

Like many rural areas, Pine Mountain Club’s geography in the Los Padres national forest meant coverage was often inconsistent. Depending on the carrier, residents could have strong service in one spot and none at all a few feet away. For local merchants, that meant difficulties processing payments, communicating with customers, and keeping businesses running smoothly.

That’s now beginning to change.

Through a new partnership between Helium, Pine Mountain Properties, and CR Construction, the town’s central business district has received a significant connectivity upgrade by deploying Helium Plus through their existing DAS equipment to provide seamless coverage for calls, texts, and data across a wider range of major carriers that residents rely on daily.

Rural Connectivity: A Unique Challenge

Pine Mountain Club began providing residents with free public Wi-Fi in 2022, through a Distributed Antenna System (DAS) network originally built and maintained by CR Construction. A DAS network is a type of on-premise cellular network that enhances signal performance through strategically placed antennas. Spotty network coverage, however, remained a problem, as it does for most remote, rural communities. Problems like physical distance from cellular infrastructure along with rugged, mountainous terrain and harsh weather conditions create barriers to wide-spread are hard enough to overcome with tradition DAS alone.

Connectivity problems have real downstream effects: out-of-town visitors driving to rental properties at night in the mountains would have to navigate in the dark, without any network coverage. Frustrated and unable to find their rental, they would turn around and go home — which meant lost tourism dollars for the community.

The Decentralized Wireless Solution

Thanks to Helium, today, about 83% of Pine Mountain Club’s merchant center enjoys strong, consistent coverage. It’s a big improvement for merchants who want to better serve their customers, and for the community at large. As more rural communities adopt Helium’s approach, reliable coverage is expanding more areas that traditional infrastructure just can’t reach.

Connectivity by the Community, for the Community

For Pine Mountain Club, partnering with Helium meant taking their connectivity challenges into their own hands. Their local initiative combined with Helium’s technology demonstrates how rural communities can solve their connectivity issues and expand their reach without waiting for conventional carriers to close the gap.
