Alpha Testnet Launched!
With all components in place we’re excited to have launched alpha testnet to make sure everything from onboarding hotspots using the wallet app, to mining tokens based on Proof of Coverage is working correctly in anticipation for our mainnet launch. More details about alpha testnet here, including early applications we’ve run on network here.
A New Protocol Blockchain
Progress would have been faster and easier if we could have leveraged an existing blockchain. However, our unique use case required adding data from the physical world to a blockchain, supporting microtransactions, and requiring a new consensus model that was useful, energy efficient, and fair. Learn more about our blockchain including why we built our own; challenges of DKG, proof-of-coverage, and our Wallet.
Develop the Hardware
This decentralized wireless network is composed of hardware, firmware, software, and a new protocol blockchain. Hardware is hard: designing boards, choosing components, building an SDR all represented big milestones we pushed through while continuously testing and iterating. More about SDR here: designing the heart of the network here (Part 1) and here (Part 2).
Our Initial Announcement
After months of research, and preparation we published our Whitepaper and shared our announcement with the world. Our innovative, decentralized approach to incentivizing anyone to contribute to building a new network was picked up by a number of press outlets including MIT Review.
