The virus scan IS the virus!

Here's an interesting new virus I came across yesterday when visiting Helium's main site. It's quite an official looking set-up and I'm sure that many people have been fooled into downloading this virus in the mistaken belief that they are actually protecting their machine - decidedly devious!

When I attempted to log on to the site a window flashed up to 'warn' me that my machine was at risk and suggested that I should immediately download the scan to check for virus'. When I attempted to close the window, a new screen came up showing that their 'scan' had located hundreds of virus' and suggesting that I needed to download their 'anti virus protection' .

I may have been fooled into downloading this virus if I hadn't been absolutely sure that there was no way my computer would allow a Windows application to pop up on my Linux machine!

Having discussed this with other users of the site and also the site staff, we believe it is from a random advert that has the virus embedded in it. Just lately we have had quite a few machines coming into the shop with this virus accidentally downloaded, so remember - the virus scan IS the virus, and be careful out there!

Ever wondered what the inside of your computer looks like?

DIRT, DUST AND RATS!

by Richard Davis

Well maybe not rats. Most people don't realize the performance and stability impact dust build up can have on your machine. Common household dust is mainly composed of decayed skin particles. Can you imagine your computer taking this in then blowing it back out - affecting your health as well as your computers.

No matter how clean you keep your house, computers attract dust. Without regular maintenance this dust can build up and cause any number of issues with your computer's health - not to mention affecting the quality of the air that you and your family breathe . . .

Our Latest Project - Introducing 'SAM'

Computer HQ is proud to introduce 'SAM' - our newest and latest innovation in our efforts to provide excellent value at reasonable cost.

SAM (the Sturdy All-Purpose Machine) was designed as a user friendly computer, capable of being used for a variety of applications in a family or office environment.

This  sturdy little machine comes with a 320mb hard drive and 1gb of DDR2 RAM. Featuring a dependable MSI motherboard with onboard graphics and an Intel Pentium E2200 dual core processor, we have made sure that SAM is completely upgradable as user needs increase and/or newer technology evolves.  Added to this is a 17" widescreen LCD monitor, keyboard, mouse and basic speaker set as part of this cost conscious package.

SAM operates on UBUNTU, one of the more well known Linux Operating Systems, making costly software demands no longer an issue. We believe Linux has a great future in IT - it has much to offer that is not available on other operating systems.

SAM's greatest asset is that it's a far more secure and stable system than any Windows application. With Linux you won't have to worry about virus infections or spyware and all your input is safe, including online banking and the like. Your Linux system can be set up to be as simple or complex as you want and is compatible with most Microsft applications. It comes with all the appropriate software such as Open Office and Firefox to allow you to be up and running from the moment you plug SAM in.

Alternatively, for the Microsoft junkies out there, SAM is just as happy to run on a Windows  operating system - it'll just cost you a bit more!

Who invented the computer?

by Jayne Scott

Apparently the most asked question on Google is “who invented the computer” followed closely by “when was the computer invented”. This got me wondering too so I headed off on a mission to find the answers to these all important questions myself – and where better to start than on the World Wide Web?

I decided the first thing to discover would be the actual definition of the word computer. The Oxford Concise Dictionary defines “computer” as follows:

noun - an electronic device capable of storing and processing information in accordance with a predetermined set of instructions.”

It really doesn’t matter much whether the world’s netbook owners prefer Windows XP to Ubuntu Linux so why was Microsoft’s Windows communication manager Brandon LeBlanc so excited about his rather dubious sales statistics?
