US ADHD Statistics

In the United States, more than 4,000,000 children under the age of 18 will be diagnosed with ADHD. The discorder is characterized by an impaired ability to concentrate, exaggerated distractability, overly high activity level, apparent short attention span and poor impulse control.

Diagnosis of children under 18:

1999-2001: 7,368,667

2002-2004: 8,323,411

2005-2007: 8,478,206

9.5% of boys under the age of 18 has been diagnosed with ADHD, and 5.9% of all girls in the United States.

Children of Asian, Hawaiian, Pacific Islander and Native American descent are hardly ever impacted by ADHD.

The least affected group of children is of pure Hispanic descent.  An overwhelming number of diagnoses are of non-Hispanic children, followed by non-Hispanic black children and those of mixed descent.

More than 5% of children diagnosed with ADHD have other learning disabilities.

In 2006, 2,900,000 prescriptions were written for children between the ages of 4 and 17 for ADHD.
