A new lease on life

Just the Facts

Organ and tissue transplants - what are they and who needs them?  Thanks to much research and modern medicine, thousands of people are given a new lease on life.  Lat year alone, from January to October, 2008, 23,288 people received organs and/or tissue transplanted from 11,809 donors (see http://www.organdonor.gov/ )  These are people who's quality of life or very life itself was enhanced or saved by the generosity of organ/tissue donors and their families.  There is no greater gift we can give to others than the gift of life.

Who can be an organ/tissue donor?  Almost everybody can donate organs and/or tissue.  You are never too old to donate.  An older kidney, for example, may be in much better condition than that of a much younger person who consumed alcohol in access.  And an older heart may be the only match for a person who's heart has given out completely.  Donor's organs and tissues are screened intensively as possible matches for patients waiting, hopefully, to receive them.  All aspects of a donor's health and history are taken into account.

At UNOS (United Network for Organ Sharing), http://www.unos.org/  there is a running clock showing the number of people currently on the list waiting for transplants.  As of January 17, 2008, at 1:21PM EST, there were 100,622 on this list.  How many of them will receive the organ and/or tissue they need depends on the number of donors, found and matched, in time.

You can save lives or increase the quality of life for someone by signing up to become an organ/tissue donor.  To make your wishes to be a donor known sign the back of your driver's license and/or carry a donor card in your wallet.  And always let your family know of your intentions as some states require family consent despite the presence of the signed license or card.

The old saying is true, "You can't take it with you."  So why not give the gift of life to someone waiting in hope.  You may even change several lives for the better.
