Poetry

  • By Bobby Coles
Awaiting outside, serenely on the ground
A clear canvas of snow has been falling
Off in the distance, a muffled voice is heard
You have to wait til tomorrow, mother is calling
Sitting idly by the window with disdain
Night sets, an inevitable visit from Jack Frost
Laying in wait atop the front of the lawn

Poetry

    The family fruitcake circles still;
    It operates its own freewill.
With fruit and nuts and stone-cold dough,
The fruitcake bounces to and fro.

This sweet confection weighs a ton
From many years of yuletide fun.
It bounces through the family tree,
As kinfolk raise a toast in glee.

Poetry

  • By Sarah Crowell
    The stars were shining brightly,
    The country side was white,
    Ice Sparkled on the trees
    On that cold winters night.

The old folks in the cabin
Were filled with hope this year,
They were sure the children would be home
    To bring Christmas cheer.

When all the lights are turned down low
    And night begins to fall,
We listen for the sound of Reindeer hooves
And strain to hear the call:

    "Ho-ho-ho!", he bellows,
    In his mighty elfin way.
    Little children wait in awe;
    'Twill soon be Christmas Day!

Celebrations

  • By Rizpah Steverson
Kwanzaa is a Swahili word meaning "first fruit". Swahili is a language from East Africa. Kwanzaa is an African American holiday that honors African American people and their past. It is a seven day celebration that starts on December 26th and goes until January 1st.

Short Story

  • By Dawn Lewis
The weather had turned bitter cold; the winds were howling and the snow that was attempting to fall was swirling in huge circles from the sky. It was a night to be in front of a roaring fire, surrounded by family and friends, not sitting in this cold, lonely place waiting. Derek checked his watch again. He kept asking himself why he was still here and what more he could do.

Short Story

  • By Miriam Cawood
Jeanie was sitting at the table in her pajamas with her red-handled hammer ready. It was a Christmas eve tradition to smash the Gingerbread house to bits and eat a piece before bed. Since Mom and Dad were out at a party, Aunt Ruth was looking after her.

Poetry

  • By Kelly Steier
    Candles of tradition
    hopes lit with moments
of sacred prayer for all life's blessings
    in the flames of glory.

    Survival of the faith
so many years ago in lands
    of Biblical proportions
of a people sent into the desert
    to fulfill G-ds prophecy,
    the miracle of eight nights.

Maybe a little like a fractured fairy tale
    Maybe a little commercialised
    Maybe a little painful
    Lonely
    Lost
    For some
    But
    Like a still small voice
Buried deep in the sham and drudgery
    There is still
    A beautiful heartbeat
    In Christmas

Poetry

    In my dreams,
I teeter down the ice-covered porch steps,
    balancing a homemade pumpkin pie
    on one hand,
    navigating the winter wonderland
    to get to the car
    without landing in the snow.

I have enjoyed my relationship with Helium the past year. I know 2009 will be as rewarding. Happy New Year to all.

Early in 2008, I was a frustrated writer that needed some inspiration, a good kick in the seat of the pants, and somebody to say, "Hey, keep on --you're doing a good thing." On March 11, after finding Helium's address on the web, I went right up to the door and knocked -- and was promptly welcomed inside. Thanks, Helium, for including me in your family. Best wishes for 2009!

Nice surprise, Helium, this "Helium Holidays 2008" greetings, story and poem. Having logged in to the "Betaville" page and having just scanned the introduction, I know that I will be back to visit both Betaville and the regular Helium site. I believe it was 2006 when I first registered at Helium and although I've not been very active at all as far as submitting articles, always...always...I enjoy returning to read and sometimes interact with others. Thankyou, Helium staff, for developing your site for us. All the best is wished for you, the staff, as well as your contributors, throughout 2009 and on.

Dear Helium, Thanks for giving me a place where I can finally do what I have always longed to do but never knew how to get started. I love composing articles and the excitement of waiting for ratings. David Swyer

Merry Christmas everyone at Helium -- and a big thank you to the staff for all you do to make this place what it is! I'm thrilled at all the opportunities that keep creeping up, and the tremendous support and feedback that we get as writers. Those of us who like myself have only recently really gotten involved here are grateful to have such an amazing opportunity to showcase our writing, share our interests and help one another grow! I hope that the coming year is a wonderful one for everyone at Helium, and again, thank you for ALL of the opportunities that we have here.
