Logistics Of Zones

Still Have Tough Questions?

This is where you can find all sorts of logistical answers as to the operations of Zones.  With everything that Zones offers users, we understand it can seem like a lot of information to comprehend and that is why we created this Zone. This Zone should answer all questions about managers, editors, publishing your Zone, saving your version, statistics, or managing user feedback. If you don't find an answer to your question here, you can post it on our Feedback and Help forums, and a Helium Administrator or other member will help you shortly.

Publishing a Page

After you've begun to edit your Zone, you will see it is the only version in the draft mode. Depending on how many times you alter your page then publish it; there will be one or more versions of your page in existence.  Only managers and editors will be able to view the draft mode and previous versions, no end users.

When you select the "Publish" button, the page will be live and marked as the most current version of the page.  If the Zone is already approved (only necessary for your first Zone), then this is the version viewed by end users on the site.  If there was already a published version, then it will become archived and you, the manager/editor, will still be able to view it through the "Show Versions" command.

Editing a Published Zone

At any time, the manager or editor of the Zone can request to edit the Zone by selecting the "edit" command which can be found on the top left of the screen.

Simply because you clicked "edit" it doesn't immediately create a draft version, only when an actual change is made to the Zone will a draft start. This is a safety feature in case "edit" was selected accidentally.

Once you select the edit command and make your first change, the published page is cloned into two versions.  One remains as the currently published page.  The second becomes the draft version under edit.  This version is only viewable by the manager and editors.  After a person clicks "edit", the page is locked from others until the person publishes the page which also unlocks it, and people can feel free to begin editing. Until it is published it isn't immediately available for someone else to edit.

Editor Basics

Ideally most Zones, besides personal Zones, should have a manager and several contributing editors.  As mentioned briefly before, the manager of a Zone can control who is an editor and how many there are. In the "Editors" tab of the Zone the manager can specify between the three levels of editor access.

  • Private - There is no built in way to ask to be an editor. It is generally up to the manager to ask others if they would like to join.
  • Managed - Included in the footer of the page's display is a note inviting users to request to be editors.
  • Public - Any registered Helium member can edit the page without any requesting it ahead of time.

Editing a Zone that Someone Else is Editing

So what should you do if another editor has started editing a draft version and forgotten to publish their changes? There is an option called “Request Release the Lock

This part gets a little confusing, so pay close attention. When you select the “Request Release the Lock” option, the system will check what time the last update was made by the person who initiated the page lock (began editing the Zone). Editing control will be passed along to the requesting editor, IF the previous editor hasn’t made a change within the past hour.  If it has been less than one hour, the editor may not get a released lock.  However, if you are the Zone manager, you may get a released lock even under the one hour time limit.  Although continuous abuse of unlocks will undermine the help from your contributing editors.

Managing User Feedback

An important task for managers is to ensure that their page lives up to the quality and decency standards expected on Helium by the community.  Any reader of a Zone can “Flag Innapropriate Content” if there is something wrong (inconsistent with page name) or inappropriate content on the page.  If someone does file a report, it will first be sent to the manager of the page, and it will be their responsibility to handle it. If nothing is done, it will become an escalated report and a Helium Administrator will take action.

Viewing Statistics

Managers and editors have the ability to check the Zone’s statistics. Included on the statistics page is the most recent number of clicks within the past 30 days, as well as number of visits since its inception.

Adding, Removing, or Becoming an Editor

Private

When displaying a page in edit mode, there is a command “List Editors

When you select that, you get a page that shows you all the current editors.  From that page you can remove existing editors or add new editors.

Managed

As a Zone manager, when someone requests to edit your Zone, you will receive a message in your InBox,  For each request, you can either approve it or reject it with links next to the item.

If you select Approve, then the requestor is approved and they will automatically get an alert in their Helium message inbox letting them know they are now editors.

If you select Reject, then you will be asked to provide a reason for the rejection.  If you confirm the rejection, then an email will be sent to the user that includes your reason.

Public

Any registered member of Helium can edit the Zone.
