Building A Zone

1. Select "Zones" from the navigation bar up above. Then select the green button "Start a New Zone".

2. Read through the guidelines, then, if you have a title in mind for your Zone, click "If you have a title in mind..." and enter the name of your Zone in the box following "New Zone Name." If it's not a unique name, you'll be prompted to request another one.

3. If you want to build a Zone but are unsure of a topic, click "a list of suggested titles" and take your pick.

4. Once a title has been selected, choose the template which best suits your Zone's subject matter. These templates are only guides and can be edited - with the exception of the advertisement block - so feel free to rearrange the contents of your Zone until you're satsified.

5. Begin editing your Zone.

Oops, I want to change the title..

To change the title visit your Zone in edit mode, select the "Properties" tab from the top, and then change the first four fields (starting with Page Title) to reflect the true meaning and purpose of your Zone.

Inserting a New Zone Block

At the top and bottom of each container there is an "Insert New Zone Block" command.

Clicking on this command will take you to a page with the different blocks available.  Each block represents a different kind of content container.

When you pick the block type you want and select "Submit," you will immediately start the process of characterizing your newly added block.  Regardless of what traits you assign to your block, you may go back at any time and edit its properties further.

Moving Blocks

In edit mode, each block has a blue four-way arrow icon near its top, with "MOVE" next to it. Use this icon to click and drag the block to a new location. When you see the words "Insert Here" appear in the place you want to place the block, simply release the left button on your mouse.

The page will reload and the block will be moved to that location.

Logisitics of Zones

If you still have questions about the logistics of Zones (publish vs. save version, Manager vs. editor, becoming an editor, editing a Zone someone else is working on, etc.) please visit the Zone Logistics Help Zone.

Content Blocks

Blocks can be made up of content pulled from any number of sources, including YouTube, Flickr, weather-forecast providers, Google Maps and Helium, to name just a few. Or you can add your own content, including videos, pictures and text. To learn about the different types of blocks, visit the Content Blocks Zone.

Deleting Blocks

To delete a block, click "Delete" on the block and verify that you would like to get rid of the block.

Requesting Approval

This step is only necessary for first-time Zone managers. We want to make sure you fully understand the Zones concept before yours goes live. If you're Zone is finished, or you think it is, please visit our Zone Guidelines to make sure that your Zone fits in with our standards and expectations of Zones.

When you're sure your Zone is ready to publish, you will see a "Publish" option at the top of the edit screen.

Click that link and your request will be entered into a queue sent to our Helium administrators. If your Zone is deemed ready for prime time, you will be notified via your Helium message inbox.

Once approved, you need no further approvals to make updates, and your page-manager limit will be automatically increased to three pages.

The title you choose for your Zone makes a promise to your readers. A good title advertises, explains, teases and helps people find your Zone easily. A good title gives prospective visitors a clear id...More>

Okay this was fun. I created one then when I had a question and left the page it didn't save.....awww man! Did it over, wanted to add a forum area which shows up but seems empty....and the places "I checked out for you area' which I renamed "The FYI Toolbox" in which I placed helpful URLS pertinent to my content but it is empty now when I click on it. How do I get the forum area to work? How do I get the URLS to show up?

Hello. I would like one particular article on my zone, but whenever I try to create the block with that article it does not come up, nor does it appear in the choices I am offered when I search the title I know it is under. Putting in the article number does not work. The article is still there, I've checked. What else can I do? Thanks for you help...

Hello all I am new to Beta. I was wondering is there any way to delete a zone that I started, it hasn't been published yet and I want to delete it and start over. Can I di this?

I guess my question is the same as J. P.'s above. I may have created a zone in my earlier fumbling experimentation. I guess my constitutional technoduncehood has become glaringly obvious because whatever request I make is denied by the attractive, brown-haired, smiling lady. My present intention is merely to clear up any messes I may have left behind and return to my comfort zone in pre-Betaville Helium.

How long does it take before people can run across the zone I made on the web? I'm sending out the URL, but that limits visits to family and friends, and I'd like random strangers to run across it, too.

My question is the same as J.P Shaw's. I have two zones showing the same name. I'd like to change the name of the 2nd.one which i did by mistake.

It seems the Zones are only accessible by Helium Members? By accessible,I mean only members can take part in polls, leave comments and rate the zones? It is not obvious to non-members that this is the case, they wander around wondering why nothing works. (Yeah, I've been getting some non-member techie friends to try it out for me.)

How do you delete a zone you've created to restart or change the zone name if you did something wrong to start over?

This could be the beginning of a whole new level of fun and adventures in Publishing for Helium members. Once we get things rolling the sky's the limit! ~Jim
