Soft Spicy Apples Made Easy

Sliced Red Hot Candy Apples

Everyone loves delicious red candy apples but eating candy apples may not be the best thing for our teeth. Plus, for those of us who wear dentures, eating candy apples could be completely out of the question. Not to worry, however, because candy apple lovers can remedy this dilemma by eating "candied" apples instead of candy apples. Apples are considered candied when they are cooked in sugary substances as in this sliced cinnamon candied apple recipe.

Sliced spicy apples may be served in a variety of ways. This candied apple recipe adds an alternative for making dishes like apple pies, tarts, and applesauce. Besides the fact that this recipe yields delicious tasting apples, this recipe allows you to eat candied apples without worrying about them sticking to your teeth. Plus, sliced candied apples are prepared atop your stove so quickly you can usually enjoy them in less than half an hour. Here's how...

VERSION I - This is the easiest, less caloric, and less fat potent method to prepare this recipe.

Ingredients

5 Medium apples, any kind, washed, cored, sliced - about 16 slices (peeling apples is optional)

1 Medium box "Red Hot" candies

2 Tablespoons sugar

1/4 Cup water

See Preparation Slide Show Tutorial Below.

Step 1

Place all ingredients in a frying pan or sauce pan that's large enough to accommodate all the apple slices. It's okay if apples slightly exceed the rim of pan however because as they cook they will reduce in size and sink into the pan.

Step 2

Cook on medium high heat until water comes to a boil.

Step 3

After water begins to boil reduce heat, cover pan, and cook ingredients for fifteen to twenty minutes on medium low heat so apples can soften.

Step 4

During softening period, maneuver Red Hots around to make certain they all dissolve in water and juice seeping from apples. The water/apple juice broth will turn red.

Step 5

Also during softening period, gently flip apples about every five minutes so all slices absorb red liquid coloring. Do not smash or cut apples while cooking.

Step 6

At end of slow cooking period, all apples should be soft and all candy should be dissolved. Increase heat to medium high so all liquid will evaporate. This step requires close attention to cooking progress, especially as evaporation reaches bottom of apples. You should notice apples turning redder and redder as broth decreases. Continue flipping apples (gently) as needed to make certain all apples acquire more red candy coloring.

Step 7

As liquid reaches bottom of pan, all apple slices should be shiny and red. You may notice candy bubbling on bottom of pan as final ounces of liquid evaporate. Once bubbles begin to look "sticky", either turn pan off if you are ready to serve the apples; or reduce heat to simmer if you aren't quite ready and you want to keep the apples hot.

After apples are done...

Don't let your perfectly cooked apples burn! If you choose to reduce the heat once the apples are done, you may still need to stir apples every few minutes to make sure they don't burn. Reducing temperature at this point should not last for more than five to ten minutes.

IMPORTANT:  Red Hot Apples cooked according to this recipe are "very-very" hot when done. Let them cool a bit before attempting to put them in your mouth!

NOTES: For best serving sizes, I recommend cooking one apple per serving plus one extra apple per every four servings. So if you are making apples for four people, cook four apples plus one apple for a total of five apples. If you are preparing for eight people, cook eight apples plus two apples for a total of ten apples and so on. Allow a extra cooking time when doubling or tripling recipe.

It isn't necessary to use only one type of apple when preparing this recipe. In fact, mixing different colors of apples may lend for a more colorful finished dish.

Red Sugar Sprinkles Red Sugar Sprinkles may be substituted for some of the cinnamon candies if you don't have enough candy. The main purpose of using red sprinkles, however, would be to help deepen red coloring in your cooked apples. The sprinkles will not give you the cinnamon taste.

Love this zone! I make caramel apple slices on my stove quite a bit, with cinnamon and brown sugar, but your recipe looks even better... redhots are great! Unfortunately, redhots are hard to find, at least in my area. I looked everywhere for them last Christmas. You might want to add an Amazon product link to a big bag of them (if you can even find them on Amazon). By the way, I'm adding a link to this on my Maple Syrup zone.
