"THOUGHTS THAT SPRING FROM MY HEART AND SOUL BECOME FEELINGS I SHARE WITH YOU ON PAPER"

Earth - Give Us Another Chance

As I lie down on the soft green grass
I look up at the branches of the oak looming above me
Her protective branches hide the clouds as they pass
Playing hide and seek as if in the clear blue sea

Sadness overwhelms me as I think of our Earth
A virgin once, young and full of promises
Lush, fertile, rich, and so full of worth
Waiting to grow, waiting for new enterprises

Through the years as men became corrupt
Wanted more and more, gave less and less
All that was natural on Earth did they disrupt
She started to change, she began to stress

Under her silent surface, her blood began to boil
No more tears, now they started to dry
Feeling ravaged she only felt recoil
It was as if she gave up and just wanted to die

I put my face against the soft grass and cried
Mother Earth, forgive us, please give us another chance
There was silence around me, but the wind did sigh
My cheeks were wet as the sun set in the distance.........

Today I discovered a gem

Today I discovered a gem

Lying unrecognised amongst the stones

Busy feet, going about their business

Walked by, never even gave it a glance

I picked the gem and wiped it clean

In my loving hands, it gleamed and shone

I closed my fingers around to keep it safe

This one, meant just for me

Hidden amongst the many stones

Today, I discovered a gem……

The rhythm of your heart

Like the beating of the drum

It makes you want to dance

It makes you want to sing

The rhythm of your heart

Like the gushing of the wave

It makes you want to cry

It makes you want to weep

The rhythm of your heart

Like the murmur of a whisper

It makes you want to surrender

It makes you want to die

Live your life well

Live your life well, live it to the full

Make each day count, each second meaningful

Yesterday became a thing of the past,

Gone, never to return, alas

Tomorrow, a new day will dawn

New hopes, new plans will be redrawn

But it is today that counts the most

Capturing the now, so nothings lost

The now shapes the past, moulds the future

Paves the way for smoother pastures

So learn to live your life to its best

To reap the fruits of the sweetest harvest

I Said A Prayer For You Today

As I bowed down today before the Lord
Thanked Him for all the blessings of my day
The food on my table, the love of my family
The ability to be able to live my life, my way
A small face I saw on TV came into my mind
A child malnutritioned and starved
With eyes so huge so full of unsaid words
Eyes that seemed to fill up the whole face
Despair and pain filled pools of innocence
My hands lifted up in prayer, my eyes filled with tears
This is for you, the starving children of our world
This is to let you know, I maybe so far away from you
But you are never ever forgotton
From the depths of my heart and my soul
I said a prayer for you today

Seasons of the soul

New beginnings, a spring like season arrives

Human birth, a seedling in the garden of life

Childlike innocence, eyes crystal clear, untouched

Taking first steps, discovering what the world is about

Discovery continues, awareness abounds

As summery days get fuelled with the energy of youth

Too many distractions leave no time for reflection

The passing of time seems to go unnoticed

All summer days have to come to an end

When the winds of autumn start to blow

The soul now starts to reflect, on times gone by

Bodies that never tired, now ask for help

The winter chill never felt this cold before

Bones never felt this weak before

The soul, too tired to remember its past

Now sits in the dark, awaiting its new chapter……

The road of her life....

The road ahead of her seemed wide and welcoming

A mirage cleverly created by a master illusionist

Confused she stopped in her tracks

There was still time to turn back, her footsteps to retract

Hoping for some advice, for some words of wisdom

No friends about, just her mind, her body, her soul

She knew this road had to be traversed

Its outcome to bear, for better or for worse

As the trees cast their long shadows in the sunset

The woman slowly started to walk the long road

Only once she turned her face to look back

The large sad eyes as if saying a final farewell

The cold wind seemed to nudge her back

But no turning back, she had chosen her own track

The lone figure walked the road into the sunset

The shadows lengthened as if to cover her footsteps…..

Africa - The Land I Love

Childhood Memories

The African sun beating down on my face
flushed with excitement my heart thumping with fear
Trips to the national park an adventure not one to forget
Watching the elephants majestic in their gait
Gentle giants going about their way
Sometimes the golden glimpse of the lions
Hidden amongst the jagged rocks
A sight enough to send shivers down my spine
The beauty of the landscape so deceptive
harshness hidden under under every grassy cover
Gazelles with lithe bodies always ready for flight
And buffaloes strong and dark against the afternoon sun
The cynical laughs of the hyenas in their packs
As if to question the human presence
A memory imprinted upon my mind
the unforgettable power of the African wild

Jungle Drums

Jungle drums, signal a celebration in the night air

Boom boom boom, a message for all ears

Young and old, no one can keep away

Time for all to come and just dance away

Wrists and ankles heavy with trinkets

Jingle with joy in the jungle thicket

Eager to dance, no time for delay

As jungle drums reverberate around the jungle air

The fire burns, the ground shakes, tonight the animals just hide away

Let the humans play, tonight let them have their own way

Race The Wind

My energy abounds, my feet want to flee

Nothing can hold my spirit down, today I feel so free

I want to embrace life, hold it in my arms

My heart races but I still feel so calm

The outdoor tempts me, calls out to me

"Come out to me, come and play with me"

Like a child with a heart open to receive

I look at the trees sprouting with new leaves

Spring is in the air, everything's fresh and beautiful

Apple blossom trees so bright and colourful

Swaying in the wind, dancing to natures tune

Their little flowers cover the ground that afternoon

I want to fly like a bird, I want to laugh and sing

Today I want to race, I want to race the wind

Puddles

Clouds emptied of water, float light and free

Rained over a land, dry as could possibly be

All around the sound of laughter and giggles

Children splashing, jumping in puddles

Single or in groups only one thought in mind

To have fun, more victims to find

No heed, no listening to scolding adults

Blame it all on this rain, this is the result

The sky now clear, no sign of any thunder

No more laden clouds spilling any water

The thirsty land drinks it all in

Like a sponge the water soaks right in

The trees sway, making the leaves dance

Enjoy this, you might not get another chance

LOVE, WEDDINGS AND ALL.........

HEARTBEAT OF LOVE

This heart became yours when we fell in love
Two hearts beat as one

Our happiness, our sadness now shared
Two bodies breathe as one

Our lives as they continue to unfold
Two souls exist as one

And as we succumb to the heartbeat of love
Two bodies become as one

THE WEDDING

The date was set, the venue decided
my daughter was to be wed, all of us felt so lightheaded

Days of planning, lists written then erased again
emotions ran high, tears welling up again and again

And then the day finally arrived
hours raced by, time did not seem to be by our side

And as she stood in front of me, my daughter, the bride
beautiful and radiant, my tears I could not hide

She walked down the aisle a vision in white and gold
Whispers, smiles and love in all the eyes young and old

The vows sincere and straight from two loving hearts
Promises hoping to be kept by these two sweethearts

I watched, a proud mother, my heart full of happiness
sentiments no words could possibly express

THE INDIAN BRIDE

She sits in silence
head bowed as is the custom
she looks at her hands and feet
adorned with henna red and vibrant

she is the Indian bride
dressed in red and adorned with gold
she shimmers and shines
with every move she makes

The women around sing in loud voices
they nudge and joke with one another

the songs are full of banter
today no holds are barred

The brides mother scurries around
a lot to do so much to organise
she gives her daughter furtive looks
her heart filling with pride

Her daughter will do her proud
she is brought up well
she can cook and she can clean
she can work if thats what she wants

The marriage was arranged
two people brought together
today they might be strangers
tomorrow they will learn to love

There is music there is much dancing
food and drink in abundance
everyone wants to enjoy
this the day of the wedding

The groom is brought in to sit with the bride
they give each other secret glances
it is rude to stare
what will people say?

The night draws near
the wedding is nearly over
all get ready to leave
it was quite a wedding

The groom leads the bride away
this is the start of their life
she walks slowly
the heavy clothes drag her down

Her heart is beating
she can hardly think straight
a silent prayer passes her lips
please let it all be okay

As they walk together she feels his hand
they hold hands and she smiles
she will be happy she knows it
it was quite a day....the day of the wedding

Changed for ever

Hardened by life, built a shield for it's every blow

Cynical at the thought of love, no woman dare come close

He watched them from afar, just butterflies flitting about

Breaking hearts not even looking back to see the pieces

His heart he had pieced it back together

Somehow held it in place to help tick his life by

And then night after night he saw her walk into the bar

A young woman with hair that shone in every light

She sat alone lost in her own world of thoughts

Lost to the noisy world that revolved all around her

Now and again her hand would try and wipe

The tears that managed to escape those sad, dark eyes

He watched her from afar and tried hard to just ignore

And then he found himself walking right up to her

Two souls hurt in love, two broken hearts finally met

Found each other that fateful night

They talked, they cried, they listened

Two cynics changed that night, changed for ever

Beautiful zone Shaheen, I don't know how I missed this one. Your poetry is full of haunting emotions, pain, hope, joy and vivid imagination all rolled in one. How about a printed anthology? I absolutely loved your poem about Ancient Civilizations. Well done.

Very nice topics and the most incredible is the using of poem to describe.

Shaheen, I am so glad I traveled over this way. I truly enjoyed looking at what makes you who you are. It was fun browsing through these articles, poems, and whatnots.

I love the international flavour of your zone. Great variety.

Drops that fall

She watches the dew drops on the young leaf

Perfect clear drops resting on the soft green

She tastes the water, cold, yet unpolluted

Holding the essence of that fresh morning

With memories, sadness overcomes

Drops start to fall from her eyes, so sad

The dew absorbs them and makes them as one

Leaving its own purity untouched

It soothes, as it dilutes the salt of the earth

Gardening

The patch of land she inherited

Every day she watched it from afar

Barren and dry, ruled by the weeds

Every kind, every variety, left free to breed

As cold days came to pass

And sunny rays peered through the clouds

The yearning in her began to grow

The patch, a makeover would have to undergo

Out came the gloves and tools of every kind

The weeds had nowhere left to hide

The ground, prepared with all things fertile

Now had in it seeds of many colourful flora

As she now looks out through her window

The flowers and the plants of yesteryear

Transformed into myriads of colours in abundance

Through the breeze, send to her a message of fragrance

Death

He appeared as if from nowhere
this creature neither man nor animal
to take what he had been told to take
no one to be favoured, peasant or royal

The woman was praying, her eyes were closed
she appeared calm but her heart did race
as the waves of pain shot through her body
beads of perspiration appeared on her face

Maybe her time had come
the pain in her heart seemed to tell her so
what would her eyes see
if only she opened them she would know

A slight breeze blew in her face
and she opened her pained eyes
you have come to take me?
will you let me say my byes?

There was silence in that room
save her moans of pain
Its hand reached out and touched her hand
her life out of her seemed to drain

So this is death
this is the end of my life
as hand in hand she walked
into the afterlife

She looked behind at her body
lying so lifeless on the floor
the pain was gone now
she was to suffer no more

The creature still held her hand
but walk they did not
in seconds they covered distances
and plains she knew not

Her life, she had lived it well
no soul she would hurt no lies she did tell
this journey she hoped would finally end
in heaven and not in hell.........

The Dove

The clouds of dust cleared and through the burning rubble

I saw destruction straddling the once peaceful land so green

What had taken men years to build and to nurture

Now lay broken, twisted and unrecognisable

I heard cries of men, women and of children

Cries that questioned, cries that made me tremble

Lives had no meaning that fateful day

When destruction reigned as king for that day

As my dazed eyes looked at this scene so dreadful

A speck of white I saw on the horizon

A dove, untainted and untouched flew regardless

Its journey had to go on even as the world wept

A peaceful, silent messenger flew above the rest

I wished I too could fly to where she flew

I wished I too be oblivious to it all like the dove……

Friendship

The times you thought I just did not care

This is to let you know I was always aware

I did notice all the things that you do

And how much you helped me just to get through

A small thanks that many eyes might see

You made me believe in Angels that walk in anonymity

Who make men believe, by their good deeds

So this had to be said, one that had to be read

These words come straight from my heart and soul

To bring you comfort and make you feel consoled

Few words, maybe not quite enough for me to show

You will never ever forgotten, my friend, just so you know

Hopes for a world, pure...not tainted

Everything you ever wanted, but could never have

Things looked so near, yet remained so far

Like a Ghost, of human body devoid

Knows not how love can be enjoyed

Fate's plans, no one dare rent asunder

What is once written, sets itself in stone

Finding your path in that stony maze

Is like being in a fog thick with haze

Many seem to have it all, lives of plenty

A piece of paradise as if given to them for free

They flaunt it all, like peacocks in splendour

Strutting about no thoughts for humans lesser

You watch and give yourself the hope

All that glitters is never gold

Yearnings for now can stay unsatiated

Hopes for a future, a new world, pure, not tainted

Gypsy

Not tied to any land or material things

Where he stops, becomes his home

His heart's door left open to new experience

His mind's eye awakened to impermanence

A gypsy roams God's vast earth

A soul who never quite found his way

Rich in tales of lands he has traversed

Gypsies, Some psychic and some so mysterious

Women in long skirts and bangles that jingle

Cross their palms for stories of  life and what it holds

Secrets you hide, love's face that beholds

Treat them with kindness and a heart sincere

Or evil curses might get thrown your way

Just let them be to live life their own way

You see them today, tomorrow they just vanish away

Ancient Civilisations

Ancient cities, cradles of civilisations

Laid the roots, prepared the foundations

Left stories for generations to come

Mysteries unsolved, difficult to fathom

The pyramids, structures gigantic and awesome

Resting places for pharaohs of Egyptian kingdoms

The Greeks left us sports, left us philosophies

Their poets, scholars, filled pages of our history

Romans, those generals of Caesar’s fame

Gladiators of their times, war like, never ever tame

The Babylonians well known for their hanging gardens

Still being searched around in the Euphrates basin

The Indian civilisation, ancient and full of wisdom

Home of many saints, rites and many different customs

The Chinese had many different dynasties

Formulating a culture that began around the Yangtze

The Aztecs, architects who practiced human sacrifice

Had to give way to the Spanish, they paid their price

Our world saw other civilisations spread their roots

How much to write?  Though they all deserve special tribute?

For you, my dearest brother

One day you decided to leave us and go
your decision sudden, nothing planned
it was to start your new life
not with us but away, far away

Nothing would make you change
no tears could make you turn
All you saw was new horizons
all we could see was emptiness
The months rolled into years
time kept ticking as it always does
When news about you would reach us
how happy that would make us

Busy in your new life now
the old life slowly forgotten
your letters got less and less
as you forgot us more and more

Then one day out of the blue

we got the news.....
you had died.....

you had left the world
only broken hearts

you left behind
when you went far away

so far away.......

To My Children

  • To my daughters Like three Roses, so fresh so beautiful Especially sent to this garden of mine Spreading colour with fragrance so fine ...

Stillness

The monk sits in meditation
The ultimate in relaxation

Cross legged, his eyes closed
mantra on his lips, serene is his pose

Shutting out the sounds that break the silence
Peace and harmony on his countenance

As he controls the lengths of his breaths
he takes on the stillness of death

A Mystical Horse

As darkness wraps its cloak around the land

Animals vanish hurriedly to their resting grounds

The stars twinkle from the velvety sky far above

As if signalling for a miracle about to happen

The sound of wings fills the dark night air

A mystical horse, pure as a pearl, white as snow

An angel from heaven paying us an earthly visit

Silhouetted and proud against the moonlit sky

It stands and watches and takes in the view

No one to witness this scene but one pair of eyes

A child watching from his room up high

His face so bright, his eyes wide with delight

And as he watches it is time for the horse to move on again

Its wings rise, ready for its flight back home again

It vanishes swiftly as it came, never to be seen again

Chocolate - One for you

Enticing my senses, luring me to buy you
sitting on that shelf, I cannot ignore you
No matter what I do or where I go
You know in the end I will come back to you

Delicious dark or mouth watering white
covered in peanuts or filled with sultanas
sometimes a hint of mint and sometimes just vanilla
tropical coconut heaven or hidden in wafers

You satisfy my craving, you melt in my mouth
the perfect dessert for any evening
One bite of you is never enough
Only a whole bar of you would suffice

Chocolate, if tasting you was a sin
any angel would happily commit it for you
I, a mere mortal am happily smitten
So here's to you chocolate, keep my taste buds singing
!

I Live

I live because I feel the joy
waking up to another new day
knowing I can still make that difference
knowing I still have some time

I live because I breathe
breathe in the fresh air of the fields
the scent of the flowers and the grasses
Nature teases, me tantalises my senses

I live because I can worship You
give thanks to letting me see Your creation
to be able to experience the gift of nature
my eyes awed at what they see

I live my counted breaths
my end written the day I was born

but before I can make my exit
I just want to live....to live
