Especially For Baby Boomers

- Written by Sheree Zielke - Today's baby boomer retiree is a bionic retiree: younger, faster, healthier and more adventurous than the average retired person from past generations. Baby boomer retirees have the world at their fingertips; their life is full of choices. How a boomer makes those choices will determine the difference between a retirement filled with boredom, or one overflowing with adventure.
- Written by Angela Coleman -
Most people from the "baby boomer" generation, meaning those born between 1946 and 1964, grew up during a time when the general assumption was that they would get married and have a family. That was the social expectation thrust upon them by their parents' generation.
- Written by Melissa Brown - The time came before we knew it was upon us. It just sneaked right up our alley. The impact of the realization for each of us as individuals was just shocking and numbing at the same time. Where did the time go? Though I still feel as though I have a full lifetime ahead of me, I realize that I'm on the other side of the mountain, and the momentum is carrying me a little faster than I'd like to go. It's that old paradox of time flying by faster as we get older. - Written by Bekjan - America could be host to over 76 million retirement parties in the next thirty years and while that may sound exciting, or even a tad trivial, it's what's had economists scrambling for answers for years now. The problem is that the Baby Boomers will be eligible for retirement by the year 2030, leaving behind a gaping whole in our workforce and our economy sinking like the Titanic.
Baby Boomers - By Definition
Featured Writer
- Written by Gool Bugwadia - All of us tend to be forgetful once in a while like forgetting names or telephone numbers or our car keys. We often attribute these to absent-mindedness. However, we tend to get concerned and worry about keeping our brain power intact, as we begin to grow older. As one grows older, one begins to envisage numerous setbacks. Difficulty in remembering important day-to-day necessary things in life becomes a matter of grave concern. However, do not despair; do not let this limitation hold you back. Stop procrastinating and start working on sharpening your mind now. Fire your motivation to live a life free from the pitfalls of forgetfulness.
As Fit As A Fiddle
- From A Nurse's Perspective: Baby Boomers, Become As Fit As A Fiddle - Written By W. Diane Van Zwol - Is exercise important from a nurse's perspective? Definitely! In the year 2010, the first baby boomers of this unique era, will begin to turn sixty-five years of age. Many baby boomers will officially enter into retirement, as seniors. Some baby boomers will enter into senior-ship gracefully and prove to be as fit as a fiddle. Others will become seniors less gracefully, seeming to be more like an old, worn out bicycle, with a broken chain and two flat tires. Fine tuning a fiddle, is the key to its current relevance. For baby boomers, exercise is an important part of that fine tuning. Remember that old bicycles can often be repaired, but not always, if they have not been taken care of properly.
Baby Boomers, Old Age And Memory
 - Written by Gool Bugwadia - What really is memory? Well, in its simplest form, memory is an in-built process of storing information and then retrieving it as and when needed. O yes, it sounds simple enough-but haven't we frequently been forgetting things at one time or the other? Many-a-times, we have been pretty alarmed at the thought of losing our memory especially, when we fail to remember where we have put our door keys or parked our car and impulsively attributing these incidents to signs of aging. ~ Does old age really affect our memory?
The query often keeps popping up in our minds as we start getting older-right? Unfortunately, yes; it has been found that old age does adversely affect the optimal functioning of our memory. Memory loss and dementia is perhaps one of the worst afflictions which affect a large number of people in their old age- seriously jeopardizing the quality of their lives.
- Written by Paul Lines - As people move into old age one of the faculties that appear to be the most affected by this passage of time is their memory. The aging process does have an affect upon our ability to remember and the onset of this problem can occur as a result of a number of different causes, some emotional based and others due to physical problems. Many of these can be addressed in an effort to reduce the onset of forgetfulness. * Psychological and emotional
Psychological and emotional upset can increase memory loss in old age. Predominantly, as the Royal College of Psychiatrists point out, this is because, when concentrating upon our inner feelings, we are less likely to notice what is going on about us.
- Written by E. Moore - Senior citizens worry over the loss of memory, and this only adds to the problem. A far healthier attitude is to accept it as a part of the aging process and to deal with it to the best of their ability. Although there are no studies being done - to my knowledge - that show worry accelerates the approaching problem of Alzheimer's, I believe it does. It makes sense to me. Anything stressful adds to this possibility. Aside from that one reality, memory loss is something all older folks must deal with. Some of us have always been somewhat absent minded, but with age, this is compounded. Since the body works as a whole whatever illnesses affecting one part of the body affects all. The brain, as one example out of many, when deprived of proper nourishment for whatever reason, functions less accurately than when it is in good health. And too, the brain, the organ that is responsible for sending important messages to the rest of the body via the nervous system, is understandably not as efficient as it once was now that it is old. It need not be!
- Written by Cynthia Wall - We joke about the misplaced car keys, the forgotten name, the elusive word, but the fear that's in the back of most our minds is that we may be losing it entirely. Everyone has a relative or friend who has slipped into dementia, a place where frustration is rampant when you can't remember even the simplest things and your loved ones grow impatient. An even darker place is Alzheimer's, a progressive disease that eventually shuts down the body as well as the mind. There are many clues when a person is tiptoeing toward dementia. It may be physical appearance such as forgetting to bathe or put on clean clothes; it may entire periods of past memories that just disappear; it may be confused behavior, depression, and terrible sadness over what is happening. When any of these symptoms appear, it's time for a thorough evaluation by a physician to determine if the memory loss is due to Alzheimer's, old age dementia, or any number of other physical causes.
Baby Boomers And Heart Health
 - Cardio Basics - Written by Carolina Dream Coy - Cardio exercise is any form of activity that gets your heart rate up. Cardio activity is very important for everyone. It is best to do at least 30 minutes of cardio perferably everyday with a minimum of 5 days a week. However, if you are a beginner you should start out slowly. You do not have it do 30 minutes all at once. It is just as beneficial to do 10 minutes at a time for a total of 30 minutes. Getting Started:
As a beginner, you should start out slowly. Find any aerobic activity you enjoy and start with a maximum of ten minutes. After ten minutes check to see how you are feeling. Generally, you should be able to carry on a conversation. When you are doing aerobic activity, you should become slightly winded but still be able to carry on a conversation. You may want to slow down a little then try for another ten minutes of aerobic activity.
- Explaining cardio workouts and how to do them effectively - Written by Maxwell Payne - People may exercise for many reasons whether it be to look good, to be strong, or just to be healthy and in shape. A key part of any exercise regimen should be cardio workouts which get your heart rate up and your blood pumping. A good cardio routine can give you more energy, reduce risk of cardiovascular problems, end your days of being out of breath after a few flights of stairs, help you lose weight, and just plain get in shape. Cardio workouts are traditionally full body workouts that can be done without any special equipment. Traditional examples of cardio workouts include running, swimming, and biking. Some people do resistance training or weight training mixed in with their cardio to build further endurance and muscle strength. But at it's core, cardio workouts are simple and effective ways to get sweating and get your blood pumping.

Baby Boomers Are Men Too!
 - Written By John McDevitt -
Are you willing to risk all the wealth you've worked hard to accumulate over your lifetime on a single throw of the dice? You're getting ready for retirement. Your mortgage is finally paid off (or close to it), you hold title to the car(s) in your driveway, and you've got a tidy sum tucked away in your retirement accounts.
- Written by John McDevitt - How important is your quality of life? As a senior, keeping fit gives you more possibilities and freedom than you ever thought possible. The choice is yours. And it's never too late to get started.
Imagine your life as a healthy, vibrant person who just happens to be older (and wiser). Enjoy the simple things in your life again, like gardening without pain, walking up and down the stairs, playing with the grandkids, and more - much more. When you're fit, you can meet each new day with enthusiasm, dignity and independence. And you'll never be a burden on your family.
- Written by John McDevitt - Throw off the burden of debt. Commit to a step by step plan, stick with it, and you will succeed. But before you plan the how, you must have a clear and accurate picture of your financial situation - how much money you have and where that money is going each month. The best way, in fact the only way, you'll accomplish this is with a budget. Then you'll know how much money you can channel into debt reduction.
MAP OUT YOUR PLAN WITH A BUDGET
Your income is the easy part, you know how much you have coming in, so write your total monthly income on one side of a sheet of paper. Take all of your bills and list them on the other side. Remember to include the monthly average for any bills you pay annually, semi-annually or quarterly. List all of your weekly and daily expenses. Again, use a monthly average. Once you have all your monthly expenses listed, and I mean all of them including the little out of pocket expenses, add them up and deduct them from your monthly income.
- Written by John McDevitt - Aging changes all the rules. Robust health depends on eating a well balanced diet rich in nutrient dense foods, but the ability to absorb nutrients from our food diminishes with age. Our body composition changes and energy requirements scale down, while the need for micro-nutrients rises. Many older people lose their appetite and eat the same foods over and over. Convenience foods may be easier to prepare but they simply can't meet the nutritional needs of the elderly. Dietary supplements bridge the nutritional gap opened by aging because supplements can compensate for poor nutrient absorption, offset poor dietary habits and help prevent or delay the onset of many chronic diseases associated with aging.
Written by John McDevitt - You may be surprised by the many ways green architecture can impact energy consumption. Green architecture has a positive impact on energy use throughout the life of the building, and can also save significant energy during design and construction. It takes energy to make a building, more energy than you might have thought. Every material used to construct a building has energy locked into it. This "embodied energy" is the energy it takes to extract, fabricate and transport materials to the building site. "Embodied energy" also accounts for the energy added during construction and finishing. Did you know it takes 127 times more energy to manufacture aluminum than it does wood? That steel needs 24 times more energy?
What Do Baby Boomers Love To Do?
Featured Zone - Centenarians
White pages scream silently
Glaring white, lifeless, blank
Where do I start?
Feelings overwhelming, wanting, reaching,
Searching for . . .
Oh where do I start?
Coffee, more coffee as I stare
Trying to pull something from thin air
Where do I start?
Words, just simple words
That's all I ask
It shouldn't be such a task
Where do I start?
Did Keats, Shelly, Mitchell and Twain
Stare at blank pages and suffer the pain?
Where do I start?
I have to write, I need the rush
To fill blank pages . . . . but wait
Coffee kicked in, the time is here
When everything is suddenly clear
Fingers punch computer keys
Words rush forth, eager, surging filling
Joy, euphoria, grips me, capturing me willing
The writer's opiate, the best addiction,
But tomorrow will see
A new blank page in front of me
Where do I start?

Eating Healthy And Longevity
 - Written by Petra Newman - We all have the power to extend our life. In fact, our body should last roughly to 120 years. Unfortunately, because of what we've been eating, we'd be lucky if we reach half that age. A diet high in calories, fats, cholesterol, salt, food additives, with too little vitamins, minerals and fiber are precursors to not only heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, and osteoporosis but also psychological problems such as dementia, depression, anxiety etc. To eat healthy isn't that difficult. These super foods are attainable and incorporating them into our diets can make a world of difference to our well being. A healthy active lifestyle coupled with a nutritious diet, can prevent cancer, reverse heart disease, lower cholesterol and clean your arteries. It will rejuvenate you with vigor and vitality, and make you look and feel younger while significantly increasing your longevity.
- Written by Jamyang Zeaba - Our body survives and sustains by burning glucose in the cells with the help of a mitochondria. During digestion and after, the glucose and the other nutrients needed for the body are absorbed by the stomach and largely by the small intestine. So, what we eat determines how we sustain our body. There're many foods that assist and promote longevity, to list few: Olive Oil: In ancient times and for centuries, the people of Greek and the middle-east have revered and consumed olive oil for their medicinal and healing power. And, now through numerous scientific studies, olive oil has been confirmed of its health benefits. Olive oil is rich in mono-saturated fats and polyphenols, both of which protect the body from heart disease and other heart related illnesses.
Due to a lack of certain nutrients in the body, we often succumb to its nemesis and diseases. Pregnant women often suffer from the deficiency of iron, and during childbirth the fatalities due to iron can occur to mother and child alike. Thus, knowing what to eat and adhering to foods that are good for the body, can assist you to live healthy and enhance longevity, too.
- Written by Gool Bugwadia - Let food be thy medicine. This was said more than 2,400 years ago by Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine. Today, these wise words of a great man have been substantiated with thousands of scientific studies indicating that food can be the single-most protector of health. Nature has provided us with a vast array of foods to reverse heart diseases, lose weight, prevent cancer, lower cholesterol, cleanse the arteries and significantly increase longevity. But most important of all, eating the right foods strengthens the immune system; it produces 100 billion anti-bodies which have the unique potential of destroying germs, virus or renegade cells that could take a dramatic toll on our health and well-being.Foods therefore play a dynamic role on our bodily health and instrumental for the presence or absence of most of the diseases that besets us from time to time and shortens our life span.

Design Your Baby Boomer Home
 - Written by Her Home Magazine - Throughout their lives, baby boomers have viewed the world and lived their lives differently than other generations. So it's not surprising that as they reach middle age, their dream retirement home also differs from that of their predecessors. Many boomers aren't planning to downscale after they retire, or at least not to the extent that their parents and grandparents did. Today's middle aged population is accustomed to larger homes. According to the National Association of Home Builders, the average size of new American homes has doubled in the last half century (from 983 square feet in 1950 to 2,225 square feet in 1999).
- Written by Gillian Sand - Listen up all you home designers! Baby boomers will physically age like everyone else, but are mavericks in their expectations, and have cultivated high aesthetic standards. Even the broom closet should look good. High design for less cost will be the defining feature of baby boomer home plan requirements. Aging baby boomers will not be afraid to move into a better home, at any stage of life. They will not shrink under the excitement and challenges of home remodeling, more than one time during their golden years. Baby boomers are energy conscious. They will design, build, or buy high efficiency homes and appliances, without sacrificing aesthetics.
