Basic Information about Me

I am the Channel Steward for the Gardening Sub-Channel. It seems like the perfect fit for me, because I'm passionate in the extreme about everything having to do with plants, flowers and gardening.

I first began writing when I was in high school. I wrote for the school newspaper. As I look back on that experience more years ago than I care to remember, I can see now that it has taken this many years for me to reach the point where my writing is what it is now.

I don't even recall what I was thinking when I first joined Helium. I must not have been serious at all because I abandoned any thought of it for at least a year. When I returned, I took the time to find out what Helium had to offer. It has provided me with the most amazing place to showcase my writing, but the more I write, the better I get.

I love sharing my love of plants, flowers and gardening with anyone who will listen. I harvest seeds, take cuttings -- when I can, and I love to share those with people as well.

Although people really know me for my obsession and knowledge about gardening and plants, I actually have a B. Music degree in Music History and Literature. I minored in piano and harpsichord performance and theory. I studied calligraphy, bookbinding and papermaking for several years before entering the University of Iowa Center for the book's graduate program. There, I studied lots of Ancient and Medieval History, book history, Latin, and much more. I completed that program in 2002.

What I Like to Write About

I love writing in general, but some how, ever since I joined Helium, I seem to have gravitated towards or devoted 98% of my articles thus far, to writing about gardening. I am a plant fanatic. I collect and grow everything I can get my hands on, but I love exotic and tropical plants and flowers most of all. I also really like cacti. It just seems natural to write about something I am surrounded by and exposed to on a daily basis.

I write about plants and gardening in the hope that my passion will inspire other people to grow plants, or even spark enough curiosity in people who aren't gardeners or plant growers, to take the plunge and try growing something.

When I feel more adventuresome, I wander to other channels, and you may find me writing about classical music (because I did my undergraduate work at a music conservatory,) or languages because I spent a lot of time studying French, German and Latin.

But most of all, my love for writing guides me, and whenever I see a title that strikes my fancy, I will write to that.

Get them into a pot with drainage and get them into full sun. New Guinea impatiens are the hot sun loving variety. They do like consistent and even moisture, but too much water isn't good for anything. If you can shield them from torrential rain in the future, that would be best for them. Thanks for the heads up! I enjoyed doing it.

oh I have a question: I just potted some New Guinea impatiens. They were doing great until we had a major rainstorm. The container doesn't have any drainage and the flowers are floating! And wilting. How can I save them? (Hope it's ok to post this here.)

OMG, Raven! People around here already have their tomatoes in the ground. I didn't know a think about blossom end rot until I had to deal with it two years in a row....probably because we were in a drought here. I have a friend who adds lime and concrete, because I guess they both provide the additional calcium. I hope that we can draw viewers to more zones by adding links to some of our favorites. Thanks for the complement about my zone. It was a long time in the works. It's a real relief to have it done.
