I'm just a girl who loves to play guitar. I'd actually prefer to play guitar over doing just about anything else. In fact, given the choice between guys and guitars, I'll take the guitars any day. They're more fun and less trouble! Now, guys with guitars - that I'd have to think about. It depends on how cool the guitars are. *winks* Seriously, I started out playing piano. My mama was a classically trained pianist and thought both her daughters should be, as well. This didn't last long though since I have an issue (as my big sis tells me) with brutal honesty. I turned five and started smarting off with the phrase, "I wanna rock!" My folks didn't even know what that really meant. I was ten before I conned them into a guitar. It was an acoustic Sears special. I love it. I still have it. Heck, I still play it, sometimes. I've added seven others to the collection through the years. Various classicals, acoustics, acoustic electrics, and electrics by Fender, Kay, and Nikko. I was self-taught until college because I grew up in a truly miniscule town with no lessons available, and alas, my sis, who also plays, was already grown and out of the house. At the University of Oklahoma though, I wove as many music courses as possible into my Film and Video Studies program, with the idea of scoring films. I had the privilege of studying classical, jazz, and rock styles with Dr. Larry Hammett, plus songwriting. Also, I had theory and history classes with Dr. Carl Rath, and MIDI courses with both Drs. Falconer and Dr. Brian Shepard who also taught my digital recording courses. I know I've been really lucky to get to study with and learn from so many amazing and talented people. Hopefully, if and when they see GuitarZone, they'll say, "Oh my God, she actually did listen in class!" or something to that effect. I hope you enjoy GuitarZone and I hope that something here strikes a chord with you. I hope you'll visit often, contribute when possible, find something helpful, and that we'll get to know each other. All the best, Carlie Lawson |
