VISITING HULL AND THE SURROUNDING AREA.

KINGSTON-UPON-HULL

Hull City HallHull Marina and Holy Trinity church     Kingston-Upon-Hull may be a fairly large City, with more than its fair share of problems but it is a fighter, and so are its people.

Situated on the North Bank of the River Humber access has been easier in recent years due to the long awaited Humber Bridge being constructed. At time of completion this Bridge held the record as the world's longest single span suspension bridge. It held this record for about 17 years and at time of writing is ranked 5th in the world.

Costing locals a small fortune, even today, it has been both a blessing and a millstone. By the time it was completed in 1981 it was too late to help locals as much as was hoped. Ever increasing tolls have also been more than just a pain. However it has brought visitors and businesses to Hull who would have bypassed Hull previously.

When Hull's vibrant Fishing trade died so did many of the local industries. Add to this the severe bombing that Hull suffered during the Second World War and it is easy to see that Hull has not had it easy during the last 60 years or so. In 2007 many Hull Homes were severley hit with the June floods.

Hull has hit unfortunate dizzying heights in more than one "Worst place to live in England" poll, but hopefully those days are gone.

So, fighters we are and the 21st Century has seen many changes around the City. The local Council has tried to revamp our active Museum quarter, our sporting heritage, shopping, theatre and more. I hope this website will give readers a taste of what is on offer in and around Hull, as it is called locally, and may encourage some to visit even if only for a day trip.

Famous local people. past and present, include:- Tom Courtney, The Housemartins, Mick Ronson, John Alderton, Norman Collier, Maureen Lipman, Phillip Larkin, Andrew Marvell, William Wilderforce, Joe longthorne, John Prescott, Alan Plater, Trevor Bolder, Amy Johnson, Roland Gift, Andrew Motion, Keith Devlin, Nick Barmby, Barrie Rutter, Sheila Mercier, Francis Durbridge, Ian Carmichael, Herbert Baker, Thomas Ferens and Maria Gilhooley(aka Waterson). This list has politicians, philanthropists, poets, actors, actresses, rock musicians and more, but is not exhaustive.

Contact me if I can help with information, advice or general visiting details regarding Hull.

An outdoor concert is being held in East Park, off Holderness Road, Hull, on 27th June 2009. It is called Back to the 80's and features Belinda Carlisle, Banaanarama, Go West, T'Pau and the Human League. Of course usually these outdoor events are notoriously wet and even in June or prone to heavy rainfall. Still you could be lucky this year but come prepared. Tickets are £30 adult, £15 child and children under5 are free. If booking for more than ten there is a 10% discount. Remember to ask for this. There will be mini marguees for hire and so a picnic could be good no matter what the weather. Advertising suggests tickets are limited and to book early. You will probably be able to hear the music though, along the road, if you canot get tickets. Tel England:-

Not meant as an insult Jayne. Just a northern quip. I dread to think what those from Lincolnshire call us :) I have heard the term Hully Gully from someone.

Not too sure if I should be insulted or not? lol Mostly I consider myself African - having lived nearly all of my (many) years there :)

Hi Ethel - what a fab Zone! You have outdone yourself :) I was born south of the Humber (called Lincolnshire back then - lol) but left at a very young age. Last time I was up that part of the world was way back in 1977/78. Great Zone - I have linked you back :)
