Avian influenza: The bird flu

Information, research, and speculation

Bird flu is avian influenza, specifically influenza strain H5N1 that infects birds of many types, including ducks, chickens, and migrating flocks. Bird flu has been a seasonal newsmaker since its appearance in Asia less than a decade ago. There has been much research into the prevention of human cases and curbing its spread in bird populations.

The effect infected poultry populations have on the humans with whom they live, the development of a vaccine for humans, the mutation of the virus to infect humans more efficiently, and alternatives to culling infected bird populations are all questions that need answers.
