The basics

HIV is the human immunodeficiency virus. It is a retrovirus, meaning that its genome is RNA. HIV attacks the immune system, resulting in immunodeficiency and a loss of T cells. This immune deficiency results in opportunistic infections. The presence of these infections is termed AIDS, acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
AIDS was a new medical enigma in the 1980s. Today, it is the subject of much research as the medical community attempts to find better prevention methods and treatments, and hopefully one day a cure. As of now, HIV infection is a lifelong situation. Prevention is key.
Each year, World AIDS Day is December 1, promoting education, prevention, and testing.
