What is a Caregiver?

Some of us are health professionals, others lay persons with no formal training. We work together when we can and alone when we must. Our patients can be strangers, friends, or loved ones. We share the joy of birth, do our best to ease the pain of the sick and comfort the dying.

Health and life are precious and we strive to preserve both. We care and we invite you to share in this caring.

Crabby Old Man..

What do you see nurses?  What do you see?

What are you thinking...when you look at me?

A crabby old man...not very wise,

Uncertain of habit..with faraway eyes?

Who dribbles his food...and makes no reply

When you say in a loud voice.." .I do wish you'd try !."

Who seems not to notice ..the things that you do.

And forever is losing..a sock or a shoe?

Who,  resisting or not..  lets you do as you will.

With bathing and feeding.. the long day to fill ?

Is that what your thinking ? ..Is that what you see?

Then open your eyes,nurse...your not looking at me.

This is part of the poem left by an elderly man who died in a nursing home.

It was believed that he had nothing left of any value

Hi Olivia, Diane and John: This zone is well orchestrated; it combines poetry, humor with professional medical information. It not only gives support to caregivers but give the public an inside peek as to what it takes to be a caregiver. This zone will always have my thumbs up vote:) By the way, I had to laugh at the poor man sound asleep, leaning on the pole. I feel for him, I think I fall asleep before my head hits the pillow; I'm starting to think I'm narcoleptic:) Good job:)

Like I said before, this is a great zone, full of important advice for all caregivers and people who are thinking about becomming a caregiver. We have to respect patients as well as caregivers. It isn't just a job. it's a vocation that involves all that a caregiver can give of him/herself. It takes alot of heart and compassion, patience and respect. this is a well thought out zone.

Hi Laura, What you may not know is that Olivia created the Caring Caregiver group to embrace all caregivers. The idea for the group began as a meeting and sharing place for the nurses, but Olivia opted for inclusion. We're building slowly, learning as we go. Helium is rolling out new professional badges and I'll ask if RD's could be included. We can use all the help we can get to spread the message of total health. We have an entire channel devoted to nutrition in the Health & Fitness channel. You wanna help out? McD
