Best places to retire in the US

Retirement living in the Rio Grande Valley region of South Texas is a great option for many whose roots are in the northern USA, and Canada. South Padre Island, Mexico, and moderate climate are attractions hard to resist when combined with relatively low cost of living expenses. Enjoy the site, even if you can't come to visit in person.

Rio Grande Valley has Birds!

435 Bird Species

One of the premier birding hotspots in the country is the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) of Texas. This special place plays host to an incredible 435 varieties of bird species. Its unique geographical location places it at a critical junction of habitat types which allows this area to attract such an abundance of birds.

The Rio Grande Valley of South Texas  at the mouth of the river represents a juncture between the temperate northern climate, and the desert and tropical climates of Mexico. The southernmost 90 miles of US highway 83, from Roma to Brownsville, represents what many consider to be the 30 mile-wide corridor which is populated by 800,000 Texas inhabitants.

Each winter sees the arrival of an estimated 300,000 visitors from northern states of the US, and Canadians escaping the harsh weather that spoils outdoor activity for several months each year. In Brownsville, a day of freezing temperatures is rare during the coldest months, a very good reason for visitors to become "snowbirds" in the Valley each winter.

Imagine: Palm Trees, Warm Weather, and Friendly People

If I could tell you how to spend your retirement years with more activities, lower expenses, and lowered medical expenses, you would want to know about it, right?

The weather in the Rio Grande Valley compares to Southern Florida, but real estate is much cheaper. Medical care is first class, but less expensive than in many places. Prescription drugs can be purchased in Mexico for a fraction of the cost in the US.

Local farmers provide low cost, high quality fruits and vegetables beyond compare. Citrus orchards are renowned for the sweetest oranges and grapefruit in the US. Added to that, northern Mexico products  helps create the lowest grocery cart prices anywhere.

Among the things to do in the RGV, South Padre Island is a major attraction. The nation's longest barrier island, South Padre Island, is home to bay fishing, surf fishing, and sport fishing. Sailboats take advantage of the calm waters of the Laguna Madre (the bay), while motorists enjoy driving up the accessible beach to enjoy the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

Wildlife lovers are attracted to areas such as Laguna Atascosa, a refuge where birders can add to their official bird sighting lists, while possibly spotting an ocelot in natural habitat. There are many areas high on the list of birding enthusiasts in the RGV, the nation's hot spot for birding.

Not the least of local attractions for visitors to the RGV is the proximity to Mexico. Brownsville's downtown business district is located at the foot of Gateway International Bridge which connects it to  Matamoros, Tamps., Mexico. A 5 minute walk across the bridge and you are in Mexico. Gift shops, restaurants, and everything that you would expect to find in Mexico is at hand.

Many visitors are captivated by the Mexican heritage aspects of the RGV, because Spanish is spoken by many local residents. The cultural influences of Mexico are interwoven into the local communities to the extent that some may feel that they are no longer in the US. First-time visitors are advised to be prepared for a culture shock. More than 80% of the permanent residents are of Hispanic heritage, and proud of it.

There may not be a better dollar value in the retirement community marketplace than the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. Valley residents from Rio Grande City to Brownsville welcome you!
