Because I am a Girl Campaign
On the 08 March 2009, a host of Britain’s female stars backed a campaign called “Because I am a Girl” on behalf of children who suffer violence and discrimination simply because they are girls. They included TV star Fiona Phillips, Loose Women’s Sherrie Hewson, ethical fashion icon Katharine Hamnett and soul singer Beverley Knight. Marie Staunton, chief executive of Plan UK said, “To have these inspirational women champion our campaign is a wonderful opportunity for our charity. Today girls and women make up the majority of the world’s illiterates and the majority of its poorest people”. Plan UK, the children’s charity is behind this drive and for more information about the campaign please visit www.becauseiamagirl.org. Launched when Plan found the shocking state of girls in the developing world, it is urging world leaders to put the rights of girls at the forefront in the United Nations goals leading up to 2015. The British journalist John Langdon-Davies founded Plan which now works in 49 of the world’s poorest countries. Sponsorship funds are used to improve health, nutritional and educational facilities in these countries.
