Alabama!

First in more ways than one ...

ALABAMA THE BEAUTIFUL

When you first cross into our state and see the "Welcome to Alabama" sign, you'll notice beneath it are the words, "Alabama the Beautiful." That little phrase describes this part of the southeast well -- from mountains in the north to sandy beaches in the south and flowing rivers and lush forestry in between, Alabama has it all.

Alabama built the first rocket to put man on the moon.  The very first open heart surgery was performed here in 1902.  The world's first electric trolley system was introduced in Montgomery, Alabama in 1886, and the Emergency 911 call feature originated right here.

For a relaxing get-away, consider our state.  We've got an abundant choice of rivers, lakes, forests and streams for camping, hunting and fishing.  Need a bit of sun? Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and the Mobile Bay area feature popular spots for sunning along with arts and crafts and plenty of shopping.

Are you a bird-watcher?  The Wheeler National Wildlife Refuge boasts 285 species of birds and in winter has the southern-most concentration of Canadian Geese and the state's largest number of ducks.

For those who like to hit the greens, visit the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, a site one of our own pro golfers, Stewart Cink, shares with friends when raising funds for local charities.

If you enjoy museums, visit Ivy Green, the home of Helen Keller, or the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, the W.C. Handy Museum (father of the blues) and more.

Other popular tourist favorites include the  Huntsville Space and Rocket Center, the Talladega Race Track, and Alabama's Heart of Dixie Train Museum in Calera, Alabama.  Stay tuned -- and consider this your official invitation to visit our state ~ Alabama the Beautiful!

Alabama's Early History

Cherokee Alphabet ~

Sequoyah , a Cherokee silversmith who resided in north Alabama, spent 12 years devising an 86-symbol written language so his people would be able to write letters, conduct business and express themselves in their own language.  After Sequoyah completed his "alphabet" project in 1821, Cherokees began publishing books, translating the Bible and printing newspapers.

The Robert Trent Jones golf trail in Alabama

"The Robert Trent Jones Trail is a collection of 468 holes of golf across Alabama at 11 sites and 26 courses.  These courses all partake of the natural topography, each having been extracted from the land, not imposed on it.  The "Trail" offers genuine championship layouts that will stand the test of time and pose major tests of golf for years to come."
