Where Knowledge Rules

Mary Clark, Scribblings Of A Freelance Writer

Mary Clark, a.k.a. Maryellen refers to her writing as scribblings and remains amazed that others enjoy and pay her for them.

Who I Am and How I Arrived Here

“Each day begins with a vow of literary celibacy.  By nightfall, the escape of each utterance that spills to the page, brands me a whore.”

~ Maryellen ~

Writing has dominated my life since my hands first held a pen.  Throughout my troublesome teens, somber and often satirical lyrics lifted stress and kept my mind open to better opportunities.  After a failed and tumultuous marriage in my early twenties, I dove into a serious study of poetry and poetic devices, mainly in free verse, although I can write in traditional form when the moment moves me.  Before long though, lyrics and poetry were no longer sufficient to quell my innate need to write.  I hurled myself into the freelance world and began creating short stories, writing articles and tackling the unfinished novel that greets me each morning when I turn on my computer. I write each day because the thrill of opening one acceptance letter makes reading a thousand rejection letters worthwhile.

Blues and Mood Music

While I enjoy all types of music, I love a good blues tune or classic piece of mood music playing in the background when I write.

Embracing Words Without Limit

Rather than confine my writing to a specific niche or genre, I prefer to hold myself open to the limitless opportunities of the world that inspire me.  When a subject presents itself, I embrace it, allow it to unfold and let the words form freely.  Should I find that I am struggling to bring a piece to the page, it is a clear sign that I should be focusing my attention on something else.  When that happens, I shelve that particular piece for a later time.

Hooo-raahhh!

After one minor formatting glitch that I had to correct, the Scribblin's of a Freelance Writer Zone is now live.  Many thanks to the staff of Helium for their assistance and speedy response to my request for zone approval.

Today's been one of those "why can't I get it together" days and after letting the articles I posted settle for a time, the type of day I've had is reflected in my writing.  Leap Frog here I come!  Oh well, we can't hit it hot with our articles all the time.

For those interested in open calls for submissions, I'd like to share with you that Cup of Comfort, a publication that I am familiar with, is seeking short stories for their upcoming book about Fathers.  The deadline for this submission call is April 1, 2009 with authors being notified of acceptance by A

On the Lighter Side

Published at Last

After opening those rejection letters, imagine my surprise when Adams Media, publisher of the Cup of Comfort Series accepted my story "On Borrowed Heritage" for publication in their book for Nurses.

Dorothy Thompson, editor of the Romancing the Soul Anthology also accepted my story "Spiritual Fusion" for her book.

I admit it; I was beyond giddy when Adams Media accepted my story for publication as this was the first time I received an ample payment for my writing.

In addition, I have self-published three poetry chapbooks:

Chasing Absolution

A Little Bit of Italia, and

Where No Slumbering Breath Stirs

My Tide of Inspiration

I was always a fan of Firefall's music and fell in love with this tune back in the day.  When I need to let my emotions roll with the tide, this is the tune that will resonate in my office.
