Who is he and what does he do?

Gordon Hamilton - An Introduction

I live in the United Kingdom and am a self-employed writer and marketer, though the marketing has very much tailed off in the present economic circumstances. In the last year, due to a variety of personal circumstances, I have moved about a fair bit. In 2008, I moved house four times - living alternately in Lanarkshire, Edinburgh and Middlesex, near London, before going full circle and returning to Lanarkshire and my old home town.

I write for a number of Web 2.0 hosting sites apart from Helium, including Squidoo (where I am a Giant Squid and member of the Giant Squid 100 Club) and Hub Pages. This means that I write upon a very wide and diverse number of subjects in a variety of different ways. The hours are long but certainly never boring and the reward when a site or article performs particularly well - from both an emotional and a financial perspective - makes the whole process more than worthwhile.

I have also recently launched a worldwide charity project with a bit of a difference, called, "The Five Dollar Vacation." This essentially involves taking and sending five single US dollar bills on vacation/holiday and trying to raise as much money for deserving charities in the process as is at all possible. I very much hope that you will check it out via the link in the first sentence of this paragraph.

What I Like to Write About

When I began writing as a child, fiction was all that I wrote. Indeed, up until my early twenties - at which point I abandoned writing completely for almost fifteen years - I had never made any serious attempt to write to any other genre.

It was only when I took up writing again, therefore, in 2007 that I began diversifying and indeed do not write fiction in any shape or form any longer. I began at this point writing upon chiefly food and drink and travel, in the form of both articles for Helium and Lenses for Squidoo or Hub Pages. Although I missed the fiction writing and may return to it at some future time, I found my new writing forms to be infinitely more successful and was soon diversifying to write upon ever more subjects.

I have made significant studies in such as SEO and Web marketing and although I am one hundred percent self-taught, it is a field in which I have known some considerable success. I have therefore written a number of "How to" articles and pages in this respect.

I therefore have a great many subjects to which I write and I love the variety this affords me. If I find myself toiling with a piece on one particular subject, I merely set it aside for a time and go on to something totally different. I believe very much in the maxim that, "A change is as good as a rest," and therefore find that this practise helps to keep both my mind and my writing fresh.

Gordon Hamilton on Helium

I joined Helium in April 2007. I initially wrote to the site somewhat sporadically as I had so many sites to which I contributed. Over a period of time, however, I found which sites afforded me the best opportunities as a writer and needless to say, Helium was very high up that list!

I now write for Helium almost every day in life, to one extent or another, and I have recently become the Food and Drink Channel Steward upon the site. As food and drink are not only very important to me in life but together form a subject upon which I regularly write, the challenges and opportunities for me in this respect are profound.

  • Are you one of those people who thinks that the traditional food of Scotland consists merely of haggis and shortbread? The reality, of course, is very different...!
  • Stress is not only a scourge of modern life, it can also be a killer. Did you know that there are actually foodstuffs which can help to reduce stress?
  • Scallops are a delicious form of seafood but can be very expensive to buy. This makes it all the more important that we do not overcook them and leave them with the consistency of lumps of rubber.
  • Roast chicken is a great favourite with many people. The reality is, however, that if we do not roast it properly, it can be under-cooked, or dry and over-cooked - either way, totally unpalatable and essentially wasted.
  • Most people think of vodka as being Russian and that it originated within that country. There are in reality, however, a number of countries which claim the credit for introducing vodka to the world...

Gordon Hamilton Loves to Travel

I have travelled very extensively throughout Scotland over the years but I also have a number of favourite travel destinations which lie further afield.

One such destination is Munich, in Bavaria, Germany. It is unfortunate that most people associate Munich only with Oktoberfest, its annual beer festival, as this beautiful city has a wealth of activities and attractions to please visitors all year round.

  • Whisky is something which most people will quickly think of whenever they think of Scotland. Very few will know, however, that there is a much older alcoholic drink in Scotland which predates whisky by several centuries. That drink is blaand.
  • Most of us have heard of the expressions "free range" and "organic" applied to chicken - but how many of us know precisely what they mean and why we should pay attention to them?
  • The majority of people will have heard of cottage pie or shepherd's pie, so what is swineherd's pie and how to we go about making it?
  • Lemon sole is one of my favourite types of fish to eat. Unfortunately, however, it is also an extremely delicate fish and we therefore have to be particularly careful as to how we cook it.
  • Single Malt Whisky: Bowmore Darkest
This is a look at Bowmore Darkest, my personal favourite single malt whisky from the beautiful Isle of Islay.
