Doula-to-be

As a new mom, I have discovered that the things that sparked my interest before having my daughter no longer seem as important--and the things that have anything to do with babies or parenting have my undivided attention.  I plan on having at least three more children, and I'd like to stay at home with all of them, so I am seeking out a career I can pursue at home.  I already had a dream of becoming a writer, and I never knew it could be so easy until I found Helium (so here I am, writing).  So as not to turn this into a Helium commercial, let me tell you a little more about my other career pursuits.

I discovered a career that would allow me to choose my own hours, get paid well, and learn about the things I'm passionate about.  I discovered the career of a Post-Partum Doula.  A Post-Partum Doula assists new mothers to transition into motherhood, ease the adjustments for the family, and provide support and education for new parents.  A PP-Doula is not merely a caretaker or personal assistant, but also a lactation consultant, baby nurse, and someone to talk to.  In addition to the duties of a PP-Doula, I would like to become a Baby Sign Instructor and a Baby Massage Instructor.  In short, I'd like to be a one-stop baby shop.

In my self-education on my way to being a PP-Doula, I will learn various parenting techniques, tips and tricks for new parents, and about baby health concerns.  I'd like to put my knowledge to use, and share with others.  I'd like to educate others, and learn from those with more experience.

That is why I've created this Zone.  I've created it to have an open forum with other parents, to discuss what I've learned and to establish a resource for those looking for advice in parenting.  This Zone will also help me to retain the information I learn, as I am a learner who remembers better when I've written it down.  I hope this Zone becomes all that I intend it to be.

Learn!  Discuss!  Enjoy!

"I'm about to collapse," I told him. "My body is just so tired!" My husband dutifully took our daughter from me and ordered me to bed. "Let me take her and you go sleep," he told me. I trudged back to the bedroom feeling relieved, but also feeling guilty. Wasn't it my job to take care of her? Am I a failure as a mother because I can't handle this stage of hers?

You see, the last couple of weeks, Leah has been draining my energy (in a good way, of course) and hasn't been going to bed before 11:30. Well, I'm ready to call it quits around 10:00, but she just doesn't want to go to sleep. So the past week or so, I've been leaving her with Mitch and he will put her to sleep later while I catch up on sleep earlier.

I felt a little guilty. The title of "full-time stay-at-home mom" was weighing heav
