Hi. I am a woman of a certain age living in Dorset, UK. I have been writing for many years but just this year I started blogging. One of my fellow bloggers invited me to follow her here, so I thought I'd give it a go. I used to have to slot my writing alongside my marketing and teaching projects, but now I have retired from those sidelines. So I am free to write as much as I want about whatever I want. I hope you enjoy reading my articles.
My passion is ...
writing, of course. I used to be reticent about this, but among so many like-minded people, it's easy to confess that. And currently, being near enough to the sea.
I know too much about ...
living in a small country town. As I write this, I've been trying to sell my house for over 18 months so I can move to the coast.
My parents always told me ...
to live within the law and help other people. My father had a reputation for being totally reliable. If he said he would do something, you knew absolutely that it would happen. My mother was often in our neighbours' homes, delivering cakes she'd baked for them, or returning some linen she'd washed and ironed when they were sick. They were good role models.
My childhood ambition ...
to write horsy books. Still to be achieved, but not now at the top of my priority list.
My favorite memory ...
witnessing the birth of my youngest granddaughter
Why I write ...
because I have to. Even though I'm retired, there still isn't enough time to do as much as I'd like.
What I am reading/watching/listening to ...
I listen to Classic FM when I'm in the bath or when I'm driving alone. Don't watch much on TV except for romantic films, classic serials and some documentaries. If I got hooked on the soaps I'd not have enough time to write. I read widely and usually have at least 2 books on the go. One I'm currently reading is a novel based on the life of Grinling Gibbons, 17th century woodcarver extraordinaire, whose work I admire. I love anything decorative made in wood.
My first job ...
working at a riding school in the school holidays and at weekends.
My best moment ...
Oh dear, there have been so many. perhaps I should pick my recent second wedding to the man I'd been with for 24 years.
My inspiration ...
is all around me - life and its accoutrements.
The background of this movie is the period of British history leading up to the time that Albert, the second son of King George V, had to take over the monarchy unexpectedly in December 1936. His older brother had decided to abdicate in order to marry the love of his life, American divorcee, Wallis Simpson. Bertie, as he was known to his family, was to become George VI and lead his country in the second world war against Hitler. The film, however, dwells not so much on these sensational episodes of history, as on the serious personal challenge that Bertie had to overcome – his stamme...
