I'm a published author of poetry, short stories, and a children's book. I have had one play and several theatrical sketches produced, and have worked in amateur theatre and in professional films for many years.
I spent some time as a radio operator in the Navy, and then completed a science degree and worked as a biochemist. After that I went back to England (where I was born) and stayed for a year, working in various jobs and basically 'bumming around'.
When I returned to Australia I then spent eight years in Sydney as a technical writer in industries such as power generation, lasers, radio, shipbuilding and heavy engineering. I was mostly self-employed and mostly worked part time. During this time I began acting, studied at several drama schools, and had some extra work in films and TV.
I moved to the outskirts of Adelaide, and I live in a beautiful area which is close to the wine regions and has some of the best beaches in the world.
I worked a few more years as a technical writer in industries such as lasers, robotics, and electronics, and also during this time became part owner of a dog boarding kennels. I've always loved dogs, and I loved helping to run the kennels. I still love acting and theatre and I'm involved with a theatre group. I still get occasional work in film and TV.
I decided to quit technical writing in 2006 to pursue a long-held dream of studying towards a Bachelor of Arts in Literature and Composition through Open Universities Australia. I've now finished the degree, although I haven't had my final semester results yet.
I'm now working as a full-time professional writer.

Thanks in part to Helium and contacts made through the site, and work I found on the strength of my portfolio of articles here, I now have so much work outside of Helium (editing and writing jobs) that I rarely have any time to write here. My articles continue to earn some money for me as long as I do some rating, but I don't rely on Helium earnings to pay any bills for me. So, the question arose, what should I do with my Helium earnings? I get a payout most months of at least $25, but these days that doesn't amount to much where I live (Australia). I used to just waste it on buying stuff ...
