About me - Roger Crain

About me

I was born in 1955 in a small town in Arkansas. I now live in Atlanta, Georgia. I have done basically everything you can think of occupationally, but the one job that stood out amongst the others were the time I spent, one summer, as an intern for a large publication.

During that time, I became privy to information as far as running a successful organization was concerned. I learned the ins and outs of the newspaper business, and had intimated of one day becoming a successful publisher. However, those intimations never panned out. Consequently, I became very discouraged about my chosen career, and frustrated to the point of abandoning my long-held ambition for a freelance journalist career.

Yet, operating as a freelance journalist on a shoe-string budget is no piece of cake. There are several mindsets that you must don if you are ever going to make it as a freelance professional.

Firstly, there must be the mindset that you are in business for yourself. Therefore, you should do everything within reason that will make your business sucessful. This requires that you should keep accurate records of your expenses and how much you earn during any given calendar year. And also, what type of company that you have.

Next, you should have the mindset of a writer/editor and be earnest about getting those ideas to the publications that you have an interest in selling your work. For me, jotting down those ideas in a notebook helped me remember to develop those ideas into full length articles or featured stories that would inevitably be rewarded with a hefty paycheck.

Thirdly, you should have the mindset that you are a professional and that you will submit nothing less than your best work, especially if your manuscripts are going to those premier markets that pay the highest fees.

Lastly, you should have the mindset of writing an article a day even if it is to a little unknown publication, but make sure you write that article.

Finally, this is the criteria for which I judge myself. The aforementioned advice have helped me in my work, and it should help you as well.
