Gordon Hamilton is the Food and Drink Channel Steward here on Helium. He lives in the United Kingdom and is originally from the town of Wishaw, Lanarkshire, in Central Scotland. He is presently back living there due to a change in life circumstances, having moved firstly to Edinburgh and then to Uxbridge in Middlesex, Greater London. What the short term future holds for him regarding his location - never mind the long term - he has absolutely no idea at this time.
Gordon Hamilton attended Wishaw's Coltness Primary School from 1974 until 1981 and then Coltness High School from 1981 to 1987. He subsequently worked for Halifax Building Society, which became Halifax plc in 1997 and subsequently became Halifax Bank of Scotland (HBOS) plc, circa 2002.
Gordon Hamilton has been a full time writer since September 2007 and writes for a great many sites on the Web. As well as writing for Helium, he is a "Giant Squid" on Squidoo and a member of the "Giant Squid 100" club. He also has "Expert" status on Hub Pages.
Gordon Hamilton writes on a wide variety of subjects. He used to write fiction but it has been a number of years since he has "dabbled" in that particular writing genre. The first subject he wrote about online was food and drink and this is a subject which has stayed very close to his heart - and his stomach! He has a great many articles and mini websites on food and drink and recently started a food blog, entitled, "What Should I Have for Dinner Tonight?" a link to which may be found in the right hand column of this page.
Recently, Gordon Hamilton started a blog for his Helium articles and will also be featuring "guest" writers on it from time to time. There will be no pattern as to whom the guest writers are; they will simply be writers whom he has come across in the course of browsing the Helium site in one way or another and who have impressed him. Wherever possible, they will be up and coming writers, as helping same are part of his Helium stewarding duties. A link to this blog can also be found to the right of this page.
It was also recently pointed out to Gordon Hamilton that his Home Page on the Web was, "Somewhat," out of date. This has now been rectified and will in future be kept as up to date as possible. A link to this site may also be found to the right of this page.
In his spare/leisure time - apart from writing - Gordon Hamilton very much enjoys sea angling, reading, travelling to a whole host of favourite destinations and using the Internet as a research and learning tool. He also enjoys watching football (soccer) and rugby union, both "live" and on TV.
If you are a Helium member and do require assistance or clarification with any aspect of writing for Helium or being a part of the Helium community - particularly if it relates to Food and Drink - please get in touch with Gordon via the option beneath his photograph on the right hand side of this page and he will endeavour to reply as soon as possible.
My passion is ...
these days, simply travelling, food and drink - and writing about both of them.
My childhood ambition ...
I am reliably informed that my three earliest ambitions were to be an astronaut, a Church of Scotland minister (because I apparently believed that meant my working week consisted of giving a one hour sermon every Sunday morning - honestly!) or - rather ominously and to this day unexplained - a burglar!
Why I write ...
because I have all these words in my head that I simply have to get down on paper.
My first job ...
was part-time after school in the upstairs warehouse of a large supermarket, transferring pallets down to the shop floor. This did not last long and I soon embarked on a banking career of some twenty years.
My inspiration ...
is forever changing. I may be inspired by the breathtaking beauty of a geographical location, the words of a song or poem, an event in my own or someone close to me's life, or even the sight or company of a beautiful woman.
It is often very difficult to think of the best piece of advice you have ever been given. Most of us are given advice on an every day basis, in one aspect or another of our lives. More often than not it is minor advice and relates to a very specific circumstance or event and will not apply again in future. Occasionally, however, we are given a piece of advice which is so profound, so enlightening, thought-provoking and relevant, that both the advice itself and the principles which apply to it remain with us for the rest of our lives. I was extremely fortunate to be given such a piece of adv...
