To pardon or not to pardon, to commute or not to commute, dominated the political scene for the last few days as President Bush exercised his rarely used powers to commute the jail sentence of Scooter Libby.

Both reasonable and unreasonable people will agree or disagree with the merits and the soundness of the President's judgment, but there can be no dispute that words have consequences. In this context the President may well have unwittingly reinforced the recently opened judicial Pandora's box.
