It was Friday the 13th of all days. I knew it was bad news as soon as the phone rang at 5 a.m. It was my sister from England. My hand shook as I reached for the phone and my worst fears were realized. My mother was dying at that very minute and I was 4,000 miles away in Canada. This couldn't be happening.
