About me - Michael Burgwin

About me

Writing has been one of my enduring dreams, though all too seldom written and only occasionally published. Poetry, short stories, love letters, activist policy, news reports, columns, op eds, features, an unpublished science fiction and a non-fiction book about the spiritual journey, also unpublished.

A compulsion to co-create and the family that ensued provided ample distraction except for occasional creative interludes. Within these pages the reader will find some old, puked and purged during my earlier adult life, tossed together with the more recent evolution of the writing me, along with some responses to the Helium tease.

Today, I find myself at a turning point in my life. As I seek a writing way, without the means to support that dream, let alone the flesh required for membership in this dream, I am faced with a person within me who refuses to continue playing the game.

There's a story in that.

Stay tuned.

Briefly me

My passion is ...

Trails into wild places, swimming with my grandfish and watching the youngers grow; conscious engagement of our spiritual journey.

I know too much about ...

Mud, mildew, mold, pond scum, and toilet bowl rings

My parents always told me ...

Bring back the change.

My childhood ambition ...

to figure out what it was that everybody else understood but which I had barely a clue.

Why I write ...

a) Because the writing wants to be written and b) because writing is a therapeutic purgative.

What I am reading/watching/listening to ...

Currently learning to read the urban environment, no small task for a smalltowner. The wild life and the wildlife within the urban setting are intriguing in the way that they stir newer and more complex themes in my writing. I love to watch people and there are a lot of people in the heart of this city. Otherwise, in the more traditional sense, one by one I am reading the Fiction Pulitzers . At this writing , just finished The Road by Cormac MacCartney.

My first job ...

Golf caddy

My inspiration ...

Watching my barely teenage daughter prepare a group of third-grade girls for their first basketball league experience by teaching them how to have fun together by playing Simon Says. Despite losing all of their games that first year, every girl returned the next. They lost their first game that year then won every game for the next three years by playing unselfish, team basketball.

In order to answer the question: Why Americans should support the troops, we have to first ask another question: What do we mean by "support."

In order to answer either of these questions we have to understand what the role of the military is in a democratic society. Very simply put, the role of US troops is to protect the Constitution of the United States. The Constitution, which protects the rights of all American citizens (and non-citizens) by defining the rule of law, also gives shape to a moral high ground that includes restraints on military force. From that lofty philosophical/sp...
