My youngest daughter was born on November 9, 1991 at 19 weeks gestation. She weighed 1 pound 4 ounces and was 9 inches long. My appendix had ruptured at 17 weeks, and the doctors thought they had removed it before the infection had spread. It was not so, it had entered into the uterus and infected the placenta. In writing this, it brigs back the nightmare that would become our lives for the next agonizing 11 months. The doctors gave her less than a 15% chance of making it through the night.
