I am a turf expert in the north, so I cannot speak in regards to southern or transition zone seeding specifics. I will focus this article on temperature and conditions needed for new grass seed growth in the northern zone. Since crabgrass preventer is put down in the spring, it is not a good time to seed the lawn. Early September is the best time to over seed an existing lawn.
