I have written creatively throughout my adulthood and finding Helium was a God send. As a career social worker, I gave up my career due to burnout. My continued writing skills, after formalized education, came through the requirements of my career. As a social worker I wrote everything from bios for our clients to monthly reports and staff evaluations. This kept the writing juices flowing for me, although I was unaware. Personally my creative writing was regulated to letters, emails and greeting cards.
I was published, in highschool, Polaris, the highschool's Creative Writing Publication. Having seen my ability, my Creative Writing teacher had me enter the state's Creative Arts Showcase, where I was featured with other young adult writers from mine and other schools, I received an honorable mention. I had not realized that I was one of the talented young adults, until then. This fed the passion for me.
Having written since grammar school. My first awards were in 7th grade and at my 8th grade graduation.
I discovered the treasure of Helium in February 2007. Writing my first article for Helium on that day and it was very satisfying. As a Christian I was impressed with the vast Religion & Spirituality channel.
Life did what life does and I floated away from Helium on the breezes, until I received an email two months later. I used the link and found my way to my article and realized I had made a few cents! Insane as that sounds, a few cents, this excited me more. I have been writing on Helium ever since. I have made a few dollars now, particularly in the contests. The learning experience, writing and information, is priceless. The forum to hone my skills and garner the expertise of the vast and friendly Helium staff is matchless.
I enjoy the stimulating topics on Helium. I have written to many channels, my top 4 being Religion & Spirituality, Creative Writing, Arts & Humanity and Health & Fitness. I enjoy the community of writers, who understand what I seek and the relationships I have been able to develope, that are not available to a novice writer, outside.
On Helium I am able to express who I am and my beliefs, in an atmosphere of respect and understanding. This is valuable to me. I respect the fact that Helium stands for quality and has not allowed the platform to become a place for blog and chat. Those platforms have their places, and I use them.
I love the fact that Helium is a place for and about the Writer. It is a wonderful opportunity, and I am honored to be allowed to participate.
