The US Pledge of Allegiance was written by a Baptist minister, Francis Bellamy, back in 1892. Purely by it's massive circulation, it began to be recited by school children. It was recognized officially by Congress in 1952, and it wasn't until June 14, 1954 that the words "under God" were added by Congress to distinguish the US from those 'atheistic' communists. June 14 was then designated "Flag Day", and people still fly their flags on this day each year to show their patriotism.
