The decision to remove Pluto's planet status was perfectly justified. Had its status not been changed to "dwarf planet", every other relatively large, round object in the Kuiper belt would have been made a planet, which would have made about as much sense as making every asteroid in the asteroid belt a planet.
There has also been quite a bit of controversy about the new guidelines for a planet, and how Earth does not fit these guidelines, due to great misinterpretation. While Earth obviously meets the 3 criteria of planethood, only the last two have been widely disputed.
