What is a marriage? Is it the union of a man and a woman before God, or a legal contract between individuals. I will argue that in either case there is no reason not to recognize and accept polygamy as a valid familial arrangement.

If we pursue the matter from the religious point of view first, the obvious examples are from the Old Testament. We all know that the patriarchs had wives and concubines. Did God change his mind and make marriage a union between one man and one woman? This is one of the questions I have for God. Doe (s)he get to change her/his mind?
