As I watched the pilot episode of "Friday Night Lights", recorded weeks earlier on my trusty ancient VCR, I felt both elated and depressed. It was exciting to watch such a creation unfold on my television screen: a superbly written, effectively acted, non-cloying tug at the heartstrings. In the back of my mind, however, was the knowledge that this wonderful show was already in danger. Despite scads of glowing reviews, the show lacked the viewers necessary for possible renewal, and cancellation looms on the horizon.
