It is my understanding that the electoral college was created because it was realized at that time that it was impossible for every voter in every state to make the trip to be able to enter their own vote personally. Therefore, each state would have a local election. This local election would then elect the men who would go and vote on the behalf of the voters in their state. of course, they are still free to vote for whichever candidate they choose even if it is not the candidate that won the popular vote in his state.
