Epigenetic silencing is a means by which cellular machinery may block certain genes in the DNA sequence from being expressed. Epigenetic silencing of tumor-supressor genes is a relatively ubiquitous cellular mistake which allows the unchecked proliferation of the cell, i.e. cancer.
