When I first went to college I was delighted to get a reading list. Concerned that I might not have enough background knowledge and eager to start off well, I religiously studied all the books suggested. This did not stop me from enjoying myself, I have good memories of sipping a drink in a chair next to the pool while enjoying Amartya Sen's "Development as Freedom". Upon arrival, I found that my background knowledge made it easier to follow the first lectures, and this gave me much needed confidence and motivation.
