Two equal armies on a uniform battlefield seek to trap the enemy king. So, look after your king: he's the only real target. Early in the game, tuck away your king in a corner by castling. Later, he'll come out fighting, but early on hide him away within lots of defending pawns and a few pieces. Always know your king is safe on every move. Then go after the enemy king.
