Until recently I worked at a primary school as the 1:1 assistant to a 5yr old who had a moderate to severe hearing loss. He was very bright and intelligent, but also suffered with extremes of behaviour and could at times be very violent and difficult. He came from Scotland where the approach is 'total communication' signing and speaking at the same time, so he had a reasonable vocabulary but was able to use signs when he needed or at the case became when he was tired!
