I believe that God does not intervene directly so much anymore is that he has already given humanity the pathway to paradise and now it is up to us rather to choose to follow the path laid before us. With the sacrifice of his son, we are all now given the chance to be cleansed and the physical world doesn't matter so much because we know it will be destroyed in the end anyway so we could not logically hope for it to be made into anything better.
