About Me
Four years ago I started writing as a rural correspondent for the largest newspaper company in the island of Jamaica. I thoroughly enjoyed the various experiences that accompanied news-gathering, and interviews. However, these experiences have been eclipsed with the global recession, as I was laid off. Nonetheless, this has left a spark within me to continue this hobby. It has also thrust me into a new social network. The benefits were fulfilling and rewarding because, I was serving people who needed recognition and a voice. Hence, here I want to become a participant on this seemly interesting site.
The vibrant, energetic and jovial personality which Marlene possess stem from the small closely knit family of mother and sister. They are my friends and mentors. My immediate family consists of two young adult sons who are currently studying and a very supportive and devoted husband of twenty-two years of marriage. All these persons are my cheering team and they have added enrichment to my life.
Professionally, I am blessed. My secondary education led me straight to the Mico Teachers’ College where I was successful and started my teaching career at the age of twenty-one. I believe in lifelong learning so to be kept abreast with new trends and techniques of the ever changing global village I study. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and have pursued a Masters in Workforce Education and Development. These qualifications allowed me the opportunity to give valuable service as a tutor for thirty-three years both at the secondary and tertiary levels. Another window of opportunity presented itself as an Education Officer with the Ministry of Education so I took up that post and supervised the paraprofessional for early childhood program
Since October I1, 2009 I retired from the education ministry and is presently working as a financial adviser in the private sector. This is another rewarding field, although it is extremely risky because compensation is done only on a commission basis and this is a challenge for me in this economic downturn. However, I have seen and experienced how life insurance has helped families better their lives.
I enjoy traveling, meeting people, sewing and photography. The latter has brought me some amount of economic fortune for the past twenty years as a part-time photographer for weddings, funerals, official functions, parties and school portraits. This skill has enhanced my work as a writer consequently; I was able to do feature articles with photographs which were highly rated. I have also written articles and done the photographs for different schools, teachers and church magazines.
I am a born again Christian who awaits the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. My principles and lifestyle revolve around my belief system.
