About me - Mary P Ivy

About me

In 30 years as a secondary English teacher, I have had many fine opportunities to share great literature with students, watch young writers grow, and see those children go on to have successful and meaningful lives. I have also learned a great deal about writing. I try to draw from these lessons and experiences when I approach a new topic.

I have a B. A. in English and graduate courses in the writing methods taught by the Iowa School of Writers. I was chosen as a top writing evaluator for my state, using the five-trait method. However, my greatest professional satisfaction comes from being named by my students as the teacher who influenced them the most and being nominated multiple times for Who's Who Among American High School Teachers.

Other educational experiences include implementing a virtual "school within a school." It was gratifying to see troubled students progress and succeed in a non-traditional setting. In addition, I have taught freshman English for a community college.

My non-academic experience includes working for the sales promotion department of a national company. In this position I researched data and compiled information into brochures used by the sales department. I also wrote the company newsletter, which required me to interview employees for spotlight pieces and to report sales activities for the five-state region.
