Superior, Arizona is my home; a small mining community between the saddle-back of Picketpost Mountain and the cliff walls of the Apache Leap. Most of my neighbors trace their families back to the Silver strike in 1882 and our downtown consists of the same buildings raised by them shortly after.If you are a writer who requires grounding in imagery and even "other-worldliness" there is no better place to be.
My wife Linda and I are both writers. In one way or another I have done so for the past thirty years, having started with "Sword & Sorcery" pulp inspired fiction to free lancing for such magazines as "Battleflag" and "Black Belt" I also am a frequent contributor to two Arizona periodicals that specialize in Old West articles and history.
My unsolicited advice to writers is to read. Reading is to writing what marrying someone who is a good cook is; at least when you try it yourself you know what its supposed to taste like.
In Long Lake, Minnesota, there is a spot known as Union Hill. Per its description, it holds a lofty position overlooking the Long Lake, the rolling crest of it shadowed with oaks, poplars and what is left of the elms. The crest itself is relatively flat and open, shaded by its natural border of trees and sprinkled in the springtime with yellow Susan's and red clover. You can't really see it from the road.
