About me - Colleen Mart

About me

Throughout my life I have always loved the written word and am a voracious reader. I have been writing in one form or another since I was about 13 years old. I also love to share whatever skills I possess with others.

At the age of 9 I started to learn how to work on cars from my brother who built race cars. My father taught me how to drive a tractor trailer truck, operate power tools and my brother taught me how to ride motorcycles. I grew up in a rural Kansas area where I learned to drive tractors and had a quarter-horse of my own. I learned to sew, knit, crochet and do macrame from reading books. I have an associate's degree in electronic engineering, am a certified paralegal and love to do research. I have always had a desire to learn everything I could.

After living in Las Vegas, Nevada for 10 years and working various casino jobs I enrolled in a course to obtain an electronics engineering degree. After receiving my degree, I landed a job in a large casino in Las Vegas as a slot shift manager and was with them for the next 10 years. I was in charge of more than 75 employees, worked on slot machines in addition to training employees and helping customers. When I changed careers I gravitated to the legal field where I could utilize my high school skills in English, typing and accounting. I attended UNLV to become a certified paralegal. I was a paralegal for 10 years and did probates, estates, AP/AR for a small firm, insurance defense and plaintiff work as well as some family law. A lot of my duties involved researching cases, medical evidence and accident reconstruction evidence. I drafted many legal documents for the attorneys I assisted .

After raising my children in Las Vegas and living there for 32 years I wanted to go back to my roots and become a farm girl again. I am now retired and living in a very remote area of northwest Arizona near the west end of the Grand Canyon and Lake Mead. I am fascinated by the Joshua tree forest that surrounds my little farm. I adore the wild horses, the long horn cattle, the coyotes and other wildlife that wander through my property. I love exploring the native beauty of the desert with my grandchildren and one of my favorite past times is being a fanatical rock hound. I also love sitting on my deck after dark to view the Milky Way, identify the constellations through my telescope and wait for the appearance of meteors.

Life is good and I am looking forward to sharing some of it with all of you.

Essays: Fossils  It was a surprise to me when I learned that the logs scattered over the approximately 350 square miles of the Petrified Forest National Park are really fossils.  I had always thought that fossils were the remains of ancient animals and never given any thought to the idea that plants were organic as well so they too could become fossilized.  What a pleasant surprise to find that under the right conditions anything organic could become a fossil and I was touring one of the most beautiful and dramatic displays of fossils in North America.  Entering the par...
