I have always been a firm believer in teens having the responsibility of an after-school job. Jobs provide something far more valuable than a paycheck for teens - they help the teen develop a sense of self worth and independence, and a sense of purpose early in life.

When I was thirteen years old, I had secured working papers with the help of my mother so I could work at a restaurant in our town. My folks didn't believe in giving allowances, so the concept of getting a job to make my own money was not just a novelty, but a necessity for me if I wanted to accompany my friends to see a movie...
