In an effort to begin taming the $1.4 trillion deficit, on November 29, 2010, President Obama proposed a 2-year pay freeze for federal workers who had been slated to receive a 1.4% pay increase in 2011. The president touted sacrifice on everyone’s part in order to get the nation’s spiraling annual deficits under control. The proposal was criticized by both sides with some Republicans wanting deeper cuts and liberal groups complaining that it would not decrease the deficit and was nothing more than a political stunt.
