My name is Wayne Douma and I am a college student at Valparaiso University in Indiana. I am majoring in Public Relations, and working on minors in Political Science and Art History. I have a wide range of interests to cover in my writing, but mostly political issues.
In January of 2009 I traveled to Washington DC, where I did a semester study program at American University. While there I chose the program of Journalism to study, and those 5 months gave me great knowledge on the field of journalism. It was not all studies while in DC though - I attended the 2009 Inauguration of President Barack Obama, covered the "We are the Future: Kid's Inaugural Ball"(sponsored by Disney and featured Miley Cyrus, Demi Levato, Bow Wow, and the Jonas Brothers live) from the press box, attended CPAC 2009, and visited the many sites our nation's capital has to offer.
My passion is ...
Politics - I cannot get enough of what is "hot" in the news today, and tend to watch cable news at least 3 hours every day
I know too much about ...
Politics, Ronald Reagan, Conservatism, The Republican Party
My parents always told me ...
"You can do anything that you set your mind to!"
My childhood ambition ...
I wanted to be a teacher originally; then the idea of lawyer came into mind about 7th grade; now I desire to work in politics and ultimately be a Congressman
My favorite memory ...
Oh I have so many from my DC semester, but favorite - getting to attend the sold out "Kid's Inaugural Ball" (part of 2009 Inaugural ceremonies) at the Verizon Center and cover the event with a great friend from the press box (and seeing Miley Cyrus live and meeting the Jonas Brothers post concert)
Why I write ...
A great teacher freshman year at Valpo once told me, "Wayne you are a straight shooter, you are not going to sling any BS-You have fresh ideas (which I confess I often disagree with), but I respect your ideas and have personally learned from them."
What I am reading/watching/listening to ...
I love to read political books (Paul Kengor is a favorite author of mine - "God and Ronald Reagan"). I read everything from Ann Coulter, and just love conservative minded books. I listen to a lot of talk radio (go figure; guess which pundits), and love COUNTRY MUSIC!
My first job ...
Bakers Square Restaurant and Pies for 3 years in high school (Dishwasher/Busboy, Host, and Cashier)
My best moment ...
I have so many, but going to Washington DC and studying for 5 months in Spring 2009 was my best life moment yet. Being one of the 2 million at Obama's Inauguration live - it was history, and I was there to witness it live.
My inspiration ...
I have so many people who inspire me. Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, and Sean Hannity are main people who I hear daily and am inspired by. Ronald Reagan is my ultimate inspiration. He was just such an amazing man, and a great President of the USA with that.
The "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" military law was signed into action by Bill Clinton, a generally well beloved Democratic President. This is a reminder that the military goes beyond partisan politics of Democrat and Republican, but instead focuses on our nation's security. That being said, the way the military is currently structured is getting their job done. The "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy is there to protect homosexuals who do serve currently in the United military. There seems to be a common misunderstanding by many gay rights activists and fringe leftists that "D...
